pack her brown lunches so she can eat while at the hospital. offer to babysit her other kids if she has them (so she can sleep or go to the hospital).

Our dd was in the special care unit for 5 days and some of our friends gave us a basket with snacks, easy meals, lotion, juices and other useful items we could snack on when at the hosital. When your child is in NICU all you think about is the welfare of the child and I totally forgot to eat and drik (which is crucial when you are trying to bf/pump) and the snacks were great.

We were also given rose bushes and I really liked that because we were not home to enjoy the bouquets, but we could plant the rose bushes in the yard and my daughter now have her own roses in the yard that we can watch grow with her.

Preemie outfits are always useful (most moms never buy it because no one expects their child to end up in the NICU) and preemie diapers as well.
