I had an 8.5 lb baby who never wore nb clothing -- it was too small. Be aware this is a possibility if big babies run in your family and plan accordingly.

Also look at store policies for returns. In Macy's you have 180 days to return an item so if your kid outgrows before you have a chance to use it you can exchange or get store credit. In Target if it is after the return date (I had the receipt) they gave me a store credit.

period here is what we really needed:
10 pairs of socks-all the same color so no hassle trying to pair them
1 pair of soft shoes robeez kind of shoes
1 gown - very easy to use but not cute at all so we just wore it at home
6 sleepers - so easy on and off make sure to get the zippered ones. snaps are a pain!!
2 sleep sacks
all the receiving blankets you can get!!!!
6 snap on shirts for the first days when you're scared of touching the baby's head and 12 onesies for later on when all you want is to do it fast!
4 pairs of pants in neutral colors to go with the onesies
and a couple of cute fancy outfits in case you intend to go to a special event with the baby...
GL OP this phase is so much fun!!!

Not sure why a newborn needs Robeez. And the zippered sleep-n-plays fit didn't fit well...they buckled and got in the way.

We used sleep-n-plays almost exclusively for the first six months (we had a fall baby). Pants seem binding on newborns and young infants, expecially during naps. I'm all about comfort and function, so I would recommend sleep-n-plays, onesies (for summer babies), and a few gowns (buy the kind with snaps so you don't have to put it over the head). If you're having a girl during the warmer weather, a few easy to slip on dresses would be comfortable as well. Avoid anything with a collar or trim around the neck. Newborns don't have necks and collars and trim can chafe. I had tons of clothes for my baby, but I ended up donating many of them because they proved to be impractical and uncomfortable.

I'd plan on changing outfits a couple times a day, due to spitting-up and potty accidents. Have some newborn clothes and 0-3. My 6.5lb baby wore NB for six weeks.

Our baby, born at almost 9 lbs, never fit newborn and outgrew 0-3 months by 7 weeks, when he moved up to 3-6 months. By 3 months he was wearing 6-12 month clothing. So don't stock up on too many small things--you know they'll eventually need 6 months and up, but you don't know how long they'll be in 0-3. Also, in the beginning, you probably don't need 'outfits.' our baby lived in one piece 'sleep and play' with onesies underneath (winter baby). for spring summer, I'd get a couple short sleeve onesies and a few lightweight long sleeve sleepers. Gowns didn't work for us, but lightweight (muslin) swaddles will be good. If I were you, I'd return a lot of the 0-3 clothes for cute stuff when they're bigger and you'll be out more, in the meantime, you can get three onesies at target for about 8 bucks. So I would wait to see how big the baby is before stocking up on too much clothing--its really not hard to pick upthe necessary pieces after s/hes born.

also, note a wide discrepancy on sizing. Carters run larger, Circo and Gerber run smaller.
