Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| I have been given a lot of newborn clothing - some used but a lot of it is new. I would like to return some of the new items for things I need more immediately. Does anyone have a range of the approximate number of onesies, gowns and little newborn outfits one needs? Is 10 of each too little? Thanks! |
| what size did ppl gift you? NB or 0-3mo? |
| Most of it is 0-3 months. Thanks! |

I'd say keep them! you only need a few NB stuff but 0-3 you'll need more and if your baby comes in a larger size you'll need it sooner than you think. if baby comes on the smaller size you can survive a few weeks with a few pieces and then run to the store and get a few more.

i think it depends how often you do laundry. we don't have laundry in our unit and only do laundry 1-2 times a week so we needed more than 10 of each. also we quickly figured out what worked best for us (for example gowns didn't work) so ended up going out and buying more of what did work (onesies). i had lots of cutesy newborn clothes but didn't have the energy to put them on since the baby pooped every feeding and it was much easier to get off a onesie than a complicated outfit. for me i think about 20 onesies was a good amount. mostly our baby would wear one outfit for an entire day unless she pooped on it, then she'd wear two outfits. but i know some babies spit up and in that case you may change them more often.
i think how much you need depends on what you end up using so it might be worth keeping what you got for a little while, assuming you can return it later, and then using the $ you get back to buy some more stuff once your baby is already here, since then you'll know what type of clothing you'l really enjoy using. i feel like i bought so much in advance to be "ready" but then didn't end up liking or using a lot of what i had, and wished i would have just waited and saw what i really liked first before investing. good luck and congrats! |

PP again. For the 0-3 mo
period here is what we really needed: 10 pairs of socks-all the same color so no hassle trying to pair them 1 pair of soft shoes robeez kind of shoes 1 gown - very easy to use but not cute at all so we just wore it at home 6 sleepers - so easy on and off make sure to get the zippered ones. snaps are a pain!! 2 sleep sacks all the receiving blankets you can get!!!! 6 snap on shirts for the first days when you're scared of touching the baby's head and 12 onesies for later on when all you want is to do it fast!
4 pairs of pants in neutral colors to go with the onesies and a couple of cute fancy outfits in case you intend to go to a special event with the baby... GL OP this phase is so much fun!!! |

10:27-39 again... PP is right it depends on how often you do laundry, with that list I was doing baby laundry every other day...
I forgot about the bibs!!! get the Carter's ones with waterproof layer they're a life saver!!! have one on at all times to minimize the clothe changing for drool and spit ups. |
LOL! My winter baby stayed in sleepers for most of the 0-3 months. I ended up going back to the store and buying lots of these -- I used some only at nighttime, and the rest for day. However noe that it's warmer, you'll likely want something more lightweight (pants/onesies). It's tough to keep socks on a baby, but I found that miniwear or Gerber had the best ones for 0-3 months (they look like terry cloth on the inside of the sock). My summer babies stayed in onesies most of the time (no pants or socks). My 6 month old is currently in a onesie and pants; he wears a variation of that every day. We don't bother with socks anymore (they always fall off!) My favorite receiving blanket was the Gerber waffle-weave; we had 4 of them. They are stretchy and perfect for swaddling. Spend money on diaper rags -- they are the best! Sleep sacks are a godsend. We barely (if ever) used a gown. LOVE LOVE LOVE Robeez, but we waited until our baby could crawl before using them. Good luck! babies are yummy! |
| Am I stupid to think that since I am comfortable going around the house nearly naked, the baby will be comfortable in just his diapers most of the day? i.e. I will not need as much clothing? |
| babies don't have the same adult ability to control body temperature. they need a cap during first weeks even durin summer in AC!!! |
| We don't use AC, which is I guess unusual. At least in this weather - maybe later. The temp. around the house is about 65-70 F |

Our DS was born in june -- HOT. we did laundry every single day because invariably there was poop / pee / spit up on the outfit.
We kept DS in white cotton t-shirts and his diaper in the house (we did not have central air, only window units), though we did swaddle him in muslin wraps for sleeping. We did have a cap or two handy, especially for after baths (to keep his head warm). Also, we skipped the socks, would just cover his feet with a wrap if we thought there was a breeze. For clothes, I had 4-5 newborn size outfits which DS outgrew within the first three weeks. Then, we had about 10 or so 0-3 size outfits, which he outgrew by around 2 months. I preferred onesies and shorts or cotton pants in those early days; though I did have a few 0-3 size long sleeve thin cotton shirts for when we went outside -- to shield the sun. Again, we did laundry every single day (or, every 1.5 days) during those early months. It wasn't until DS was about 3-4 months old that he could consistently stay in only 2 outfits a day and now, we're more of a laundry every 5 days family. |

My January baby lived in a long-sleeved onesie plus a sleeper for the first two months. Now, it's either a short-sleeve onesie (on really warm days like today) or a light cotton sleeper.
I had no problem with snap-up sleepers (vs. zipper). I think we had about 6 and just did a lot of laundry. We had about 10 onesies. OH - one big recommendation for the first few months - kimono-style onesies. Basically, they open up in front like those wrap-style shirts for newborns, but they also snap at the crotch. We got a few from family abroad, but I've also seen them at Target from Gerber. I hated traditional wrap shirts because they rode up so much, but these were great because you don't have to wrestle them over baby's head and they stay in place. SO EASY to put on and off - I was glad baby was wearing one of these for his first poopsplosion while out and about! They only make them in NB and 0-3 mos, though - I want bigger ones too! Pants are cute, but annoying. If it's too cold for bare legs, I'll pick a sleeper (even for all-day wear) rather than have to do onesie + pants. |
| You'll be doing laundry often, so no real need to stock up! A couple of outfits, a couple of onsies, some pants/shorts, hat and some socks and you'll be all set! |

For us, the BEST article of clothing were the little white t-shirts that snapped in the front kimono style. So easy to get in and out of, doesn't go over the head, doesn't irritate the belly button, and they come in newborn, and 0-3 size. She lived in those, a diaper, and sometimes jammie pants (she was an August baby)
I wish they weren't so hard to find. They are pretty cheap. |
