Is a 1430 good enough for unhooked applicant to get into UVA?

4) make sure the recommendation letters reflect her desire to attend UVA and be STEM focused
5) apply as a female engineer to the E-school

1430 is on the low end of the SAT UVA is looking for, sorry. But she can turn this into a possible yes given the above. It is worth a shot if she has her heart set on it, make sure it comes through the essay.

Good luck.

You are wrong about the SAT being this important to UVA. Flat wrong.

It should be

It's literally a crapshoot.

I have one at UVA right now who had a lower SAT than 1430, but was in the top 5 of her graduating class, a difficult course load, and 4.2 GPA. She came from a public school.

Kid #2 applied with a higher SAT, 4.3 GPA , difficult course load, but his class rank was only in the top 20, and he was from a private school. He got rejected.

Both were in-state and both had varied extracurriculars... sports teams, music, student gov., etc. Neither had any hooks.

UVA wasn't his #2's first choice, so he was fine with the rejection.

In-state or out-of-state?

Class rank really matters a lot at UVA.

I think my kid had a 1460 and got in. She also had a 4.66 and was 4th in her class of 350, so that also helped a lot. In-state.

I am the PP with the list. For UVA, the GPA and class ranking are very important with SAT score lag slightly behind. One can compensate a lower SAT with an impressive ranking (such as the one posted earlier). This is also why often time kids with high SATs but lower ranking (outside of 10% or top 10) don't fare as well.

DS just went through the cycle and got in with 4.4W, top 10% of class, SAT in 1500s. He chose another school ultimately. But after sitting through all of those sessions and seeing how friends' kids fared through the process across the scores/gap spectrum. Hence my list to cover all bases and hopefully give OP's DD a favorable outcome.

It's not literally a crap shoot. That means people are shooting at poop. Or gambling. That has nothing to do with college admissions.

It might be figuratively a crap shoot. That doesn't make much sense though, either.

Yikes. My oldest just entered MS. So where do all the A students who did well on SATs but don't get into UVA go? Is it likely GMU or JMU only? So crazy competitive.

Crap shoot refers to the gambling dice game craps.

They have other great options such as W&M, Michigan, etc. Admissions can be unpredictable these days. Just because a school like UVA took a pass on a kid doesn’t mean another will. A friend’s DD was WL’d at Michigan but accepted at UCLA. The key to this game is to apply to a diverse list of schools that your kid would be happy attending. Don’t get too hung up on THE one or the ultimate dream school.

My white, unhooked, a couple of long term ECs, 1440 SAT, 4.1 GPA in fairly rigorous classes kid got deferred EA and rejected RD. We expected that because no matter what Dean J insists on her blog, UVA definitely seems to have a GPA threshold (and it's close to 4.4 for our HS according to Naviance).

Not according to the naviance I have access to. There are some rejections where you don't expect to see them, GPA wise.

They look at weighted GPAs?

And the PP even shows that there's a clear difference. One was in the top 5 in the class, so obviously the academics were tops. They got in. The other was "top 20" and got rejected. Not a crapshoot.

There are thousands of colleges. There are at least a couple dozen in Virginia. They'll be fine.
