Do I want a wooden glider or an upholstered recliner?

Anonymous
I'm trying to decide which type of chair to get for nursing. I recall seeing some posts about 2TMs wanting to get a recliner this time so they could get some sleep between feedings. How common and/or necessary is this?

I'm trying to avoid spending a lot of money on a recliner or even a glider I won't ever use. I don't need any other chairs in my house so this will only be for nursing. But if having a recliner is that important, I am willing to spend the money on this one piece.

I also have other chairs in other rooms in the house that are comfortable enough for nursing but don't rock. How important is rocking/gliding to the nursing/feeding process?

Any and all thoughts and advice is appreciate.

I had an upholstered nursing chair and loved it but i think, more important than the chair is the pillow. I tried both a boppy and a brest friend. The brest friend was soooo awesome. Back support and it stayed put unlike the boppy. I liked my boppy later when i was trying to prop DD up for sitting but brest friend is the best for nursing. I'm getting a new cover for my DD#2 due soon

OP here: Thanks for your input! Can you tell me which brand/style you bought?

i don't remember the brand but it was from babys r us. If i had to do it again i'd just get a rocker from a furniture store though. The rocker i have was great but didn't wear well and cost more because it was a "nursing chair". just find a wide (so you can fit yourself and nursing pillow), comfy rocker and make sure to get a nursing stool or ottoman to prop your feet up.

I am VERY glad I talked my DH into a glider. He didn't see the need beforehand, but he is very glad we have it now! I like being able to feed DC in her room before she goes to bed and when she was waking during the night. Not having to take her into another room was a definite bonus (although I know some people do not have rooms that are big enough for this; her room isn't huge, but we made it work). I think the recliners are almost too big width-wise to make nursing/feeding comfortable. We used a Boppy and it sits almost right on top of the armrests which is the perfect height for us. Her room is right across from ours, so where to sleep wasn't an issue, but it might be for some people.

I was given a second hand wooden glider. BUT if I had to spend my own money I fell in love with a glider/recliner (upolstered) at BBB when I sat down to nurse my baby. It might have even swivled too. but it was great.

I insisted on getting a glider (upholstered) with an ottoman, but didn't end up using it much. I opted for upholstered instead of wood b/c it was more attractive to me and was less obviously nursery furniture. Whatever you end up getting, I'd recommend that you get something with a back that's high enough to support your head/neck.

If this is only for nursing and you don't need another chair for your house long-term, I strongly suggest trying CraigsList.

We found a great glider that way. We spent $100, and though it was perhaps not as perfect as what we would have had if we paid 3x more at BBB, it was great and I happily nursed DD in it for a year. After that, we put it back on CraigsList for $5 less than we paid and away it went.

We'll likely find another glider on CraigsList before DC#2 is born. In the meantime, it's great that the first glider hasn't been cluttering up our house for the 2 years between nursing DC#1 and giving birth to DC #2. (Of course, we would have bought something much nicer/more expensive the first time around if we planned to keep it as a piece of real furniture long term. But that's not what we ever had in mind.)

I find the reclining is good for nursing. The rocking is beneficial for soothing baby to sleep.

I asked a similar question a few months ago. Here is the link to that thread.

We have decided to go with a recliner-style chair that also rocks/glides. We don't have it yet but I plan to order one of the Little Castle chairs off Target.com

We ended up getting a recliner that rocked and am SO happy we did! The gliders were more expensive and not nearly as comfortable The recliner has a foot rest that comes out when it's reclined and there were definitely nights when I was sleeping with DD on me in the recliner!

Shoot. I'm due in a few weeks. Am I doomed if we don't have any kind of rocking chair? Several comfy places to sit to nurse, but nothing that rocks...mistake?

We have an upholstered glider with ottoman that is absolutely wonderful. It looks like a nice club chair. DD is now 2 so we are well beyond the nursing stage. It served that purpose very well. We read books to her in the chair at bedtime. She is now old enough to climb up into it and she loves that she can make it rock too. I'm glad we got the upholstered glider over the wooden one because it transitions very well into a nice child's chair for when you are no longer nursing. (Assuming you plan to keep the glider past the nursing stage.)

Not necessarily. Some kids really like the motion, some don't. DD is definitely a "I need the motion" kind of kid. It definitely helps soothe her right before bed and nap time.

PP, I nursed in bed mostly, the head support wasn't as good ( see the PP) but was fine. I have no idea how one would nurse in a glider, I would think the baby would run into the arm rest since they are across your lap. I must be missing something...
