S/O Anyone had/know kid very behind when moved after DCPS?

Do you have or have you known of any kids who were very behind or even had to repeat grades when moved from DCPS (either to other publics in area or out of area or privates)? Keep hearing nebulous rumors of kids who needed intensive math tutoring or who even had to repeat a grade. Anyone have any first hand or even good second hand info of such a situation? We are happy at our Ward 3 school but wonder if we are drinking the kool aid.

OP here, I suppose if anyone responds it would be interesting to hear how old the kids were at the time of the transition. Maybe 3rd vs. 6th makes a difference too?

DC went to DCPS pre-K to 6 then went to private. No issues. The same for DC's classmates that did the same.

Same here. DC went on to private after grade 6 without problem and I haven't heard this to be a problem with others changing after 6th or 8th grades.

OP, I know the DC public schools are supposed to be awful, but I believe it depends greatly on the individual school, and even more so on the family life and parental involvement the children have.

Monitor their maths and reading comprehension and try to infuse some critical thinking skills by thoughtful discussion at home.

OP, thanks for posting this.

Kids went to JKLM until 5th grade then switched to private. No problems adjusting and have done very well.

JKLM and then to Sidwell. No issues. Continue to do well.

Why am I suspicious of all the "oh yes, all was well after DCPS" tone of these posts. Really?

well pp -- the kids who were actually accepted into private after going to DC publics aren't the ones who would have the problems...it's the ones who were rejected.

Np personal experience, but I knew 6 kids who went to Janney: 3 went to Maret, the other 3 went to different Cath. schools.

I did meet one woman whose son went from DCPS to private in 6th - I can't remember which private - it wasn't one I'd heard of a the time. My son was in Preschool at the time. I think it is one I'd know now. She said the first year at the private, he struggled and she had to advoate for him. He then completely caught up and she felt great about the decisions they had made - both the public and the private.

My MIL taught in Faifax county and says my son's DCPS classwork is on level or above what she taught. She volunteers in his classroom frequently. She retired from teach about 10 years ago.

There are some DC haters that seem to lurk on these boards that love to bash the District at any chance they get.

Have seen DCPS kids enter our "big 3" both at 3/4 and at MS. No major transition issues as far as I can tell. Foreign language isn't always in sync (JKLM kids can be behind; Oyster kids ahead of privates), but it gets worked out fairly quickly and easily. Small class sizes and open-ended assignments help.
