VYS Soccer - better or worse?

I've had two sons play for VYS travel so far over the past couple of years, with mixed results, but overall I have a positive view of the club.

One of my sons was placed on a "C' team two years ago -- the coach was disinterested; the team lost every game (sometimes by blow-out margins); the team was demoralized. We were new to the travel club at VYS and weren't happy with how that season turned out, but there didn't seem to be anything to do about it other than do our best to support the team. The next season, my son went back to VYS house and has been having fun. He's naturally athletic and very good, but he doesn't have a passion for soccer, he just plays a little for fun.

One of my other boys is in his second year playing travel for VYS. Being able to compare him to my older boy, I can tell he's just more of a naturally talented player, and that he just naturally loves the game more. Last year, he was on the "B" team where his team managed to notch a few draws, but did not win any games. But the coach was more interested in the players and he still enjoyed it, maybe because he was younger and the losses rolled off his back more easily. This year, he's playing on the "A" team for his age group, and they've won every game, usually by blow-out margins.

Neither winning every game easily nor losing every game seems "right" to me, but I don't know what the solution is. This whole US youth soccer system is so ridiculously complicated, no wonder clubs struggle to match their different teams with the right opposition; and no wonder why parents struggle to find the "right fit" for their kids. But that's not VYS' fault.

It might be better to just have an "A" team and a "B" team and tell the rest of the kids to play house and work on their skills to try to make the travel team next year. But I suppose there is financial incentive to having a "C" and "D" travel team.

In hindsight, as a parent, I would be hesitant about having my boys play travel on anything less than a club's "A" or "B" team -- the quality of play and the ability to match up with appropriate opposition just seems too hit-or-miss, in my limited experience. Nothing wrong with playing house, working on your skills, and trying out for the travel team again next year. Or maybe look for a different club with a more appropriate level of competition.

The point of C and D travel teams is getting professional coaching for the kids. I don't know if that's worth it for kids playing at C and D travel team level - each parent and kid must make that decision for themself. However if your kid is on a C or D travel team and the coach is disinterested, the team loses every game (sometimes by blow-out margins), and the team is demoralized then I think it's pretty clear that your money is being wasted - and personally that would leave me with a fairly negative view of the club.

Agreed. I’ve posted in this thread that my daughter started on VYS’ D squad and is now on their B team. We’ve been very happy.

At Ulittle, the kids change so much year to year, and the coaching plus playing opportunities are light years better than house.

We’ve liked every coach our child has had.

I don’t know but Arlington probably won most. Might be a little closer if it’s only Arlington vs Vienna natives, despite the 8x population advantage that Arlington has. Gimme a break clown.

I’m guessing that was tongue in cheek. ARL parent here and no one was celebrating. In fact, what moron would celebrate a win in a friendly? Well, maybe Pipeline or Bethesda. These scrimmages were a chance for VYS to play against a higher level of competition. I give Vienna credit for getting out of its comfort zone. If anyone wants an accurate assessment of the games for 07 and 06, just ask.
