"Not a Sermon" on WTOP

Anonymous
Anyone hear these little tidbit on WTOP yet? I have to say, I'm really annoyed by them. I listen to WTOP for NEWS. The station has changed and I no longer want to tune to it. What other station is there for news/traffic/weather that won't attempt to add religion. If I wanted that I would be listening to a christian station.

I've caught them before by accident going through the dial and I agree, they are annoying. Sometimes offensive. Not what I want to hear.

Yeah, the whole "commentary from both sides" seems to have a strong Republican slant. Am I wrong?

They've had that running for years. I always figured it was paid advertising. Don't know if you can discriminate against that or not, though, as far as whether a station chooses to air a particular ad.

Isn't that just a paid ad from McLean Bible Church. I hear them on all kinds of radio stations. To me it doesn't mean WTOP is attempting to add religion - just collect advertising dollars to stay in business.

OP here. I was not aware that they have been running that for years. I heard it for the first time yesterday. If it is an add, then it's been paid for and free speech and all. However, it at first didn't sound like an add, but a short spot from the station itself. I admit, I tuned it out and did not listen to the end to know whether it was an add or not.

1. they are advertisements. how are they offensive? you must be offended all the time if you live in the US where most likely agree (based on statistics) with those messages.

2. from two sides means from two sides. i think it funny that you would complain. obviously that means you are only used to hearing from the left. If I only listened to fox news all day, I would be shocked at hearing commentary from the left ...

its an add for McLean Bible Church, and when I heard him say "not a sermon" I was like yeah right!

Anytime my husband or I give a piece of flippant advice to each other we finish up with "just a thought, not a sermon."

That church is so much like a cult

They are paid ads from McLean Bible Church. I do find them annoying, but their money is as good as anyone else's. Much less annoying IMO than the "no food taxes" ad spots. Or holy guacamole, I wish they would just hurry up and pick Boeing or EADS for the freaking refueling tanker project so they can STOP those ads!

I feel better now LOL!!

interesting thing is the head of the church was born jewish and converted. got some controversy for that a few years ago ...

OP again. Sorry to raise a controversy. I've just never heard them before. Everyone is entitled to free speech and if it is a paid spot the station certainly wants their $$. I don't mind hearing both sides, but I really dislike being preached at--basically being told Jesus says to do such and such. As I was listening I heard that and that is what annoyed me. FWIW, I listen to several different stations radio and TV.

what's so controversial about that? anyone can convert to christianity.

Ha Ha, yes, I heard the EADS rebuttal for the first time this AM. Wish they'd get it over with too.

And if the "sermon" ads are ads.... there's no obligation to identify who pays for them?
