DD has developed awful diaper rash...we've had some before, even have some Rx cream from the ped, but this beats that hands down. We tried the Rx cream for 4 days, no help. We have now moved on to triple paste, which we just started last night. It seems a little less raw but still very red and DD is screaming when we change the diaper. Any other suggestions? My current regime is just water to clean ( no wipes), air out for a couple of minutes, and then triple paste. I think it might be caused by eating a lot of citrus fruit...any one else experience that? Any help is appreciated!

There are many kinds of diaper rash. I would call the nurse-line of your pediatrician and describe the rash to see if you need another type of Rx or cream.
I used Burts Bees diaper creme and gave DD diluted guava nectar in the bottle (tip from my Mexican nanny), it worked for my two when they were babies. Otherwise, keep doing what you are doing.
we have used vusion rx and love it
If she's in that much pain, I'd call the ped - could be a yeast infection or something else. That said, a friend of mine said the hospital used Mylanta on a diaper rash after his son was born and it worked wonders - who knew?

Try airing it out a little longer. Take baby outside and get some sun and fresh air on that bum! Works wonders!
(This is in addition to whatever medical remedy you choose.) We just made it through a nasty yeast rash with a combination of antifungal cream and sunshine.... |
My ped's office suggested half lotrimin cream, half desitin. Worked well for my son.

If you breastfeed, squirting expressed breastmilk on her bum and letting it air dry can be helpful.

Stop using the diapers for a few days (I'm assuming you're using disposables). They don't breathe. When DS had a horrible diaper rash, we used triple paste but, more importantly, left diapers off him for day. Overnight I just loosely wrapped a cloth diaper around him and changed it every time I got up to nurse him. It made a huge difference, very quickly.

For baths...just use baking soda and maybe a little Cetaphil (can buy at CVS) -- baking soda baths realllllllly helped the nasty diaper rashes we have seen. Good luck.

Triple Paste -- the actual name-brand and not a homemade version -- should clear it up pretty quickly. Try to change diapers at least every hour -- be vigilant. Do not wipe the area at all -- instead, rinse in the tub/sink or with a cup of warm water over a waterproof changing pad. If you don't notice any improvement in 48 hours, then go to the ped.
to address the citrus question, yes it may be caused by eating that or something upsetting to the stomach. For the time being, if your child is eating solids, try going with mild foods or the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast).
I totally agree with this. I know "naked time" can be tricky as you don't always have time to be cleaning up accidents, and the weather isn't THAT warm yet... but I think even 5 minutes of running around in the buff (between diaper changes, and PRIOR to putting on any cream) can do a world of good. When our son gets really bad diaper rash, we've done more "naked time"... its really helped. These things need air to heal... and keeping cream on 24/7 sometimes inhibits the healing. |
As another PP said, you really need to see the pediatrician. There are many types of rash that a baby can get on his/her bum. It could be diaper rash that has turned into a yeast infection, it could be bacterial, or (as it was in our case) it could be eczema (and none of the other treatments worked -- even air time). In our case they ended up giving us a cream specifically for eczema and it really helped (although we are still trying to track down the source of the problem).
sounds like a rash caused by yeast infection. Call doc and ask for meds for that. My son had it recently, I used monistat cream. it was gone almost instantly after a week of trying every thing else. good luck
