rate my teachers

I have found this site useful
http://www.ratemyteachers.com/

There are very few ratings, so it has to be used with care, but it does give you a view of the school and, most importantly, its teachers, that you won't get anywhere else. Just type in the name of your favorite private school.

I must disagree. Looked up teachers we've known for years and found the comments to be agenda-based from a handful of people and totally different than what a majority of parents thought. In addition, many teachers no longer there are still listed for that school.

Many of the major schools in this area not even listed.

Sidwell, Maret, GDS and NCS are listed.
What major schools, plural, are not?

If you have a different view of the teachers, maybe encourage your kids to post those views? As with DCUM, when enough sane people post, you can weed out the crazy ones more easily. I have to admit I was suprized by the low ratings of a school we have applied for. I wondered also, if it is because it is a boys school, and boys might on average be more critical?

Half the teachers at our school are no longer there. The site should be updated to reflect current status - otherwise, this is a poor way to research a school.

Even if the teachers are no longer there, it gives you some idea of the type of teacher that passes through?

You can't trust these. A few students who didn't get the grades they thought they should could retaliate with nasty, sour grapes reviews.

In the USA, girls are socialized to be good, nice, polite doormats.

of course, that is the same (or maybe from browsing both, worse) with DCUM

The site really is "mickey mouse." No guidelines or regulations posted and it appears that the majority of comments written are by pre-teens.

This site is useless. I just checked out the school where I have worked for many years. It's actually kind of sad because a couple of the teachers reviewed have died and it appears that 1 of the reviews for 1 of them was written post-mortem and another was written while the teacher was on the death-bed. They weren't tributes to the teachers either. Then there's a review for someone who has worked at the school for years but never taught there reviewed as if this person taught. Then there's a positive review for a person who can be very annoying and negative reviews for really super, hard-working people. There are reviews for several people who have been gone for years, 1 of whom I've never even heard of. There's some innuendo that I happen to know is completely off base. There are definitely some comments (both positive and negative) that are spot on, but I would say that is a very small portion of the overall. I suspect every school (certainly every school I've ever attended, worked at, or sent my kids to) has it's "characters" about whom negative things could be said, but this site is really skewed. Really quite useless. I should note, in case it seems like this is sour grapes, that the vast majority of reviews for my school are positive and that I was positively reviewed. I was flattered for a moment before I noticed that the wording on my review (the only one that had a written comment about me) was very similar to that about several other employees. So this person thinks great things about a bunch of us -- flattering but useless!

Well, I guess I'm glad to hear that it is useless. I applied to two schools, but preferred this boys school to the other. I was sad to see that the boys had given their teachers quite low ratings when I had only heard good things about this school. Students do spend much more time with the teachers than the parents. Sometimes they know much more than they are willing to say, and much more than their parents know. (certainly I knew many things about my high school that my parents did not). But, I guess this site may not be the best way to try to tap into this resource.

It's like Amazon reviews - the very first people to post are the ones who had a bad experience and want to vent. Even worse, the bad experience may be something subjective, like the kid got a well-deserved C or D. Whereas on Amazon it's something objective, like shipping was delayed or the product was broken. Just like on Amazon, the teacher reviews are to be used with caution until there's a critical mass like 20 or 25.

I just checked it out and noticed the DS's school stretched the truth dramatically with regard to teacher student ratio. The website says that it has a ratio of 18:1. Ha! The reality is more like 36:1!

I looked at my kids' school and had to laugh - there are teachers listed who have never been at the school, names or subjects listed incorrectly, etc. Even the comments are so blatently written by kids ("She's soooo kool !!!") that it's not worth anything.
