Please explain how the area surrounding DC has decided to close its schools and DC schools remain open?
Also, it makes no sense to keep the federal gov't open--not even liberal leave--when all the fed parents who live in VA and MD now have no school. |
| Well, I think the reason Mont. Co. and Fairfax are closed is because there is more snow in the NW and western parts of the counties, perhaps ice. In D.C., its really just mush - driving and walking may be messy, but doable. |
| It's matter of transportation. The surrounding counties are bigger than DC and use extensive bussing for the students. In DC, many students have the option to walk. The Feds usually follow what public transportation can do, they don't follow whether parents have to stay home or not. People throughout the country would be in an uproar if the FEDERAL govt was to close everytime the surrounding school systems did. |
| More to the point, the vast majority of DC school teachers are driving in from VA and MD (and their kids have no school) |
| yes i fully agree... bethesda is fine, north mont co is probably a mess. same with rural parts of ffx. dcps also provides many students free/reduced lunch which is another motivation to stay open. here's hoping tomorrow we get everything off! |
| DC has always been like this - open when everyone else is closed. When I was in private school in DC they went by whatever Montgomery County was doing. Don't know what they do today. |
| No way the Feds close tomorrow, maybe a 2 hour delay. They don't close often, last year was out of the ordinary. |
| I jsut wish the feds would do liberal leave/telework-- it would make the commute much better I think. |
then you have a back-up care plan and for my child's public charter school, the vast majority of the teachers actually live in DC |
I thought Arlington and Alexanderia were open today? |
| DC schools shouldn't be closed today. It's wet and slushy out, not piled with snow and ice. Maybe you should ask why are MD and VA schools closed? |
| The only bus service in DC is for special needs kids. Other kids walk/take public transportation. DC also tries not to close whenever possible b/c for many kids the breakfast/lunch they receive at school are the only (or only substantial) meals they eat all day. |
Great point! |
exactly. it's raining, people! |
| Because we are supposed to get dumped on later this afternoon. |
