What do you think about when you are trying to fall asleep at nght?

I tend to think about one of about 4 or 5 scenarios that I have thought about since I was a teenager. Like, if I am feeling ansty, I will think about that feeling I used to have after hours playing in the ocean when I would collapse onto my beach towel. Then I imagine the warmth of the sun all over my tired body and that feeling of drifting in and out of sleep on the beach. (It's really detailed--I can smell the beach, see the pattern on my towel, describe the exact fluffiness of the clouds passing by overhead, etc.) I think I have been using the same scripts for years! DH says he thinks about sexual fantasies, but they are constantly changing. Do most people do that? I would think the arousal would keep you up. I think a lot of people might think about what they did that day or what they have to do the next day, but I think that would keep me up. So, what do you think about?

OP here: I meant to say "antsy". Sorry.

wow, yours is a nice one. i usually either replay situations from the day and agonize about what i did wrong or stress about things that are coming and start making mental lists of things to remember. it's not fun.

Sex....and when I wake up

"I really liked the elementary school we visited today for DC who is going to start K in the fall. Wow, the principal was nice and so helpful. Great facilities. I wonder if she'll make friends. I can't believe how chic the mom looked that was dropping her kid off in the office - I wonder where she got tha top. Did I pull out the chicken from the freezer for tomorrow? I have to remember to stop on my way home to pick up the drycleaning. I can't believe I forgot to make a many/pedi appointment for Saturday - I'll have to do that first thing in the morning. Will I have time to go to the gym first? Should I take the kids with me or will they have more fun hanging out with DH? I still have to get a birthday present for the party my kids were invited to - maybe I'll ask DH to run out while I'm at the gym (with our without kids). I wonder if it's snowing yet outside - will I have to clean the car off in the morning? Maybe I shouldn't be wearing the stilleto boots I was planning to wear. Crap, my car is out of windshield washer fluid - need to get some on my way home after I get the drycleaning. I wonder if DC#2 will have night terrors again tonight. Is it even worth going to sleep before midnight, or should I just stay awake so I can deal with her when she starts screaming?"

That was last night.

I read until the book falls off the bed and my husband switches the light off. I have to have a good book to read...I will get drowsy from reading (even really good books)...and then drift right off.

I seriously have to have a book every night...and even if I only get to a few pages or so..it does the trick. I guess it clears my mind and calms me.

I think about my 22 mo. DS and the cutest/sweetest/funniest thing he did that day; it makes me smile and relaxes me. If I don't do that, I have the same sort of stream of consciousness as 15:02.

I used to think about all kinds of things but since i cut fluoride out of my diet, I fall asleep in less than ten minutes with no effort. You all should try it.

Before sex, I think- I'm a little wound up, I wonder if sex will help me fall asleep.

After sex, I usually think - man now I will only get X.X hours of sleep. Crap. .

Then I'm out.

Yes, I'm a woman.

I think about where my family will be in the future, where my career will be, and things like that. Lately I've been fantasizing about buying a home in DH's home country and raising our children there with goats and chickens.

DH says he thinks about things he'll need to do the next day, Star Wars ( ), and looking at me.

Total fantasy life where I'm the greatest singer, pilot, FBI agent, lover, whatever. It's like a soap opera.

Falling asleep in less than ten minutes sounds like a sign of sleep deprivation to me.

Often, I do what 14:51 does.

Sometimes, I build elaborate fantasies about other lives I could be living, sometimes sexual, sometimes not. Usually involves a different partner than the one I have, and a different job. But always includes my child and Washington DC.

And often, I just read something trashy til I can't keep my eyes open anymore.
