If my husband dies before me is it true

that I still have to pay his student loans? I have a law degree from another country and there no one can inherit debit. Of course, if he leaves any assets, those can be used to pay any debit he had, but nothing beyond that.

My husband says the laws here are different (duh) and that I would still have to pay it - it does not make sense to me. Is it true?

Also, is life insurance money considered inheritance?

For financial planing. We are trying to decide how much to get for life insurance.

No, you will not have to pay them. My friend's wife died and he did not have to pay her dental school loans. If you

I'm pretty sure you do. You are also responsible for any credit card debt he may have.

If he has assests the lender could (and probably would) go after them, but you personally are not responsible unless you are a co-signer on the loan. I'm not sure how student loan lenders behave but I have heard that credit card companies will try to get spouses/dependents to pay even though legally you are not required to pay a debt that is not in your name.

Is your name on the loan? If not, I doubt that you have to pay. Yoou have a law degree and you can't find this out for yourself? I hope you aren't practicing law in the US.

Depends on who signed for what and how things are titled. Talk to a financial planner or lawyer. The PPs have given incorrect and/or imcomplete information.

I don't think she will be responsible for anything she didn't co-sign but his "estate" will be so you have to use assets to pay liabilities.

OP here: Thanks to most of you. I did not co-sign anything since when we met he was already out of school. He has a VERY high student loan debit, so I do worry about these things. Does anyone know if life insurance is considered inheritance here in the US?

you would be inheriting his assets if he leaves them to you in his will or in trust after any liabilities to his estate are paid. he has to name you as his beneficiary on any life insurance policy.

I know that pp, but what I don't know if the money he leaves through life insurance is considered part of the "estate" and be claimed to pay the student loan debit after he dies.

If they are federal loans, you aren't liable for them. If they are private loans, you probably are.
