That is super weird because if he is messaging the detective, why doesn’t the detective have the messages?

Doesn't sound like he pulled the trigger, whether he dropped the hammer too forcefully or the gun went off unexpectedly (as had apparently already happened).

Alec Baldwin didn't point the gun at Halyna and if he did, it was because she asked him to. Magically, the gun that wasn't pointer at her managed to fire, in Baldwin's totally innocent hands, and bend around through air to enter Halyna. And the cops are lying, and if you question Alec about it, he will lunge at you violently because that is what careful, non-violent people do. He's just a bit testy because he has PTSD from being famous, according to his Spanish wife.

Baldwin was a producer, not just an actor on the Rust set. The film was being made very cheaply. An experienced armorer had applied for, then turned down, the job on Rust because he said that the budget was inadequate to do the job safely. The young and relatively inexperienced woman hired after that, Hannah Guiterriez-Reed, agreed to do double duty- as both armorer and prop master. She wasn't even AT the church during the fatal rehearsal, being pulled somewhere else at the time. A number of workers had walked off the day before because of safety and housing conditions. Baldwin and the other producers cheaped out and Ms Hutchins paid the price.

He still hasn't turned over his phone. What's the deal with that? How do you avoid a warrant? Could he have permanently deleted something crucial or does all phone data exist somewhere in a cloud (on a server somewhere = another warrant?)?

I strongly dislike Alec but wouldn't read much into his refusal to turn over his phone beyond what we already know. He's being uncooperative and he's not being forthcoming, but from the standpoint of his attorneys, they probably want to do whatever possible to slow the progress of the investigation into Alec’s actions and to muddy the legal waters in any way possible. The start reality is that Alec shot someone and that could have serious repercussions that he likely wants to avoid.

The "start" reality is that there were several negligent parties and, like the last famous on-set shooting, no one will be charged.

As for moral culpability, since you know better than everyone, including the experts, you'll decide that for yourself.

I think most people who shot and killed someone, and had a lot of money to pay defense attorneys, would take this course of action. Alec is maintaining that the gun magically fired in his hands-- a statement that strains credulity. Of course he wants to slow the investigation, etc. Any reasonable person would.
