DC Public and Public Charter Schools
| Does anyone know, or want to hazard a guess, as to when school will start in August? I'm working on summer camp and vacation plans, and didn't see a 2010/2011 calendar out yet on the DCPS website. I'm thinking it will be the 22nd rather than the 29th, but this is only our second year in DCPS so I'm kindof a newby. |
| I'd guess that it would start on the 29th. It usually starts the week before labor day. |
|
For 2010 /2011 DCPS started on August 23rd - 2 weeks before labor day.
I assume your question is about the 2011 / 2012 school year? |
| August 22, 2011 is the first day of SY 2011/2012. |
|
My guess is August 22.
PP, do you have confirmation of this from DCPS? I couldn't find anything on their website. I'm just guessing based on the start-date for the last few years. |
Yes |
| Yes, I meant 2011/2012! Thanks everyone! |

The calendar for School Year 2011-2012 has not yet been finalized, as soon as it is finalized it will be posted on the website. We except it to be online in March. The proposed first day for students is August 22nd, 2011, however this is in no way certain.
If I can be of any further assistance please let me know. | I'm 15:14, the e-mail I posted above was a reply from an inquiry via the website today, Jan 4th. My personal opinion -- starting school on Aug 22nd, then having a 2 week winter break, is a horrible set of choices |
| I enjoy the 2 week winter break, especially as a divorced parent...gives the kids a chance to see both parents for a decent amount of time |
| Yes. I also enjoyed the 2 week break. |
| Having just spent $700 on winter break camps, I would prefer an extra week in August and winter vacation to start 12/22. If you want to take your kids out of school, I don't have any problems with that. But we aren't off to winter ski trips or need 2 weeks with relatives. My government office is packed with staff having to bring their kids in because they don't have the money for winter break camp. |
| I agree, two weeks before Labor Day seems ridiculously early -- plus it must be so hot in some of the schools that don't have good air conditioning. And two weeks off in the middle of the year, when so few winter camp choices are available (at the PS/PreK level at least) is terrible. Really annoying. |

Thanks for email from Rachel Frank! Is there a way to vote for options? Can't please everyone, but if there are broad reaching issues with August start maybe a survey is in order. For us, more summer camp vs more winter camp is the same. My understanding about more timeoff in winter is weather related to avoid potential for snow days.
We just want to know ASAP to make plans. |
| OP here. I'm actually annoyed that they won't finalize the schedule until March - summer camps, especially in August for the younger kids, fill up fast, as do reasonably priced beach houses, so I need to figure out this month what weeks we sign DC up for camp and when we take vacation. |
