ECNL moving to school year not calendar

Should be an interesting year.

The change was officially adopted in late February 2025 - to go into effect in August 2026, which was right around 17 months. Apparently, every USCS and USYS club needs 17 full months to figure out how to move Q4s from BY teams to the team down (or leave them on their current team)? Having a 17 month lame duck period is too long.

If the leagues make transitional rules in 25/26 that allow Q4s to play down next year (at the club's option) it would make things way more interesting. Let's hope.

Our club already reorganized a bunch of U-little teams that were already playing up into SY grouping. It's easier to do with the U-littles since they often play up anyway, but like we're full speed ahead on changes!

This makes no sense.

First switching from BY to SY allows some currently rostered BY players to play down in SY. (Not play up)

Second your team wouldn't be able to participate in tournaments or league games.

Just another lieing parent trying to sway public opinion.

ECNL tryout is already finished. The tryout group is based on skill, not birth month. Our NL group had one Q4 player joining one of the sessions, but quickly move him back to the RL group. One of our new NL players is Aug birthday. So NL coach doesn't care next year.

I'm definitely not lying. The top U12 teams have played U13 up for years. So instead of just pure 2014 teams playing up with 13s next year, it will be 14s mixed with fall birthday 13s playing U13. They are doing the same with the 15 top team, which is 15s and fall birthday 14s that will also be playing in U12 instead of U11.

Those teams will then play in those same groupings and same age groups the following year.

You need to think more creatively before going into attack mode. The OP said their U-littles often play up already. So you keep your Jan-Aug kids on that team that plays up a year (let's say 2016 kids playing in 2015), but you add the older Sept-Dec 2015 players who are the correct age for that division. Thus you now have a team formed based on the new cut-offs (Sept 2015 - August 2016), and next year they are playing in the 2015 age grouping. Completely legal for all cases - league, tournaments, etc.

The reason they did not change the age groups had nothing to do with kids and clubs. It’s because of ECNL and MLSN/GA starting their new leagues. It would have been too much of a lift for everyone to have the age group change and try and get all their rules in place for these new leagues.

It’s easier to do that for Ulittles because all the U little leagues have already said they are going with 9/1. What everyone is waiting for is ECNL/MLSN/GA to say what their plan is to address this.

Because these are the elite leagues for most kids hoping to play pro or college.

I know ECNL is going to change their age groups but using what method has not been established yet.

I agree with this thinking, but I would also think they could have got it done.
Also what is the new ecnl league? I heard something about this before but not sure what it would be.
Thanks for any info!

This has been a very long drawn out process. I guess they want to give families and clubs a good amount of time to adjust and prepare for this. I understand that the leagues don’t want to deal with this until at least the 24/25 season is over but families have known changes were coming since the US Soccer announcement end of November 24. At this point I’d just like information from the leagues as to who is doing what. I have kids on both sides of the cut off and I know it doesn’t really change anything for my kids, I’ll still concentrate on them having fun and getting better, but I’d still like to know. Just getting a little impatient at this point.

They have two ECNL-RL leagues now. One is for ECNL second team the other is for non ECNL top teams.

This will help ECNL clubs with age group changes as they can now offer everyone roster spots and let the talent decides who pays ecnl or rl.

Confirmed by our coaching director (Blackhawks of St Paul, MN):

By Fall 2026 the MLSNext 2 will be SY.

Good news, it is a must for our club, otherwise we could not organize the rest of the club and the leap from U12 to U13.

Regarding MLS Next 1 it’s undecided at this moment, either BY/SY.
