MCPS consistently prioritizes DEI initiatives over student safety and well-being. Instead of investing in building Crown, they should have prioritized on renovating Wootton to address serious issues like mold and asbestos.

As soon as they finish the moves they will need to immediately move the school to a holding school. So shortsighted.

Wootton is one school. Over crowding exists at several schools.

I am not talking about overcrowding, but about the schools that need to be renovated. And I think this is a good time to look at plans for any school that desperately needs renovations- I only mention Wootton as that is our home school (now and following districting). I think they should use the new schools smartly, not haphazardly as it appears they are.

Yeah I only know about some of the issues at Wootton based on some students talking about it at board meetings.

But Magruder has had issues with it's boiler system not working and I think they had a water main break within the last several years too.

They're both due for renovations.

With Howard County's major redistricting back around 2019 there were a lot of angry families too. To the point where they had to have police present at the board meetings. But that didn't stop them from looking at the majority of the school system. (this is in reference to another comment further back about how MCPS decided not to look at the school system as a whole for these studies due to fear of backlash)

And that's exactly what MCPS should have done. It's ridiculously short-sighted that they didn't just bite the bullet and get a full system wide boundary study done. The current studies look at 19 or the 25 HS. It’s only missing Blake, MacGruder, Paint Branch, Sherwood, Springbrook, Rockville.

They probably purposely took these out so they could justify building crown and rezoning other schools.

Taking them out didn't justify anything. A boundary study is approved once the school is already approved for construction. They should have said that given the number of schools in play, the findings from boundary analysis, and the need for a program review, now is perfect time to do a full boundary study that would set the district up best for future success.

Probably not, some of those schools are way too far to even be justified to be in the boundary study. Even if they weren't, some of the school cluster maps NOT affected could change their cluster map to prevent overcrowding if that still becomes in issue in some of the other schools.

I’ve been beating this drum on here for a while. Crown should be used as a holding school in order to knock down and rebuild both Wootton and Magruder (or Magruder then Wootton) followed by QO. The former two will be ~55 years old in 27-28 and QO nearly 40 years old. Then do a boundary study. So shortsighted.

Granted honestly they could have done 200-300 seat additions at Churchill, Gaithersburg and RM and also to raze and rebuild Wootton or Magruder. Probably would have cost just a tad more to do that. Since they’d be needing to redo those two schools anyway soon, this would have been far more cost effective without disrupting everywhere.

I’m not sure if distance is a factor since even poolesville is in the study. It’s just selectively pick and choose for their agenda. Someone mentioned some county council lives in Sherwood? It’s a school lacks diversity.

Poolesville is in the study because of the Damascus HS expansion and the overcrowding at Clarksburg. That’s why is called the Crown HS and Damascus HS study.

+100. And makes sense given where some of their planned and in-process construction is occuring.

People never acknowledge that capacity projections are always WRONG. They are always projecting growth that does not materialize. This going to turn out to be such a total scam.

It is a total scam. In a decade MCPS is going to have trouble filling out 80% capacity in many high schools.
