weight issue

hello,
I'm due around 20 of June and have a bit of a concern.Since I got pregnant I have gained about 35 lb. I have always been fit but before I got pregnant I gained a bit of weight. What do I need to do not to add much more weight? I eat pretty healthy but I guess this is not working...Also how much have you gained during your pregnancy. Thanks

with my first DS I gained about 40 pounds in total - about a pound a week. I worked out during pregnancy, ate well, etc, etc ....and worried about my weight.....but, DS was born on the small side (perfectly healthy) and I lost all of the weight within 6 months (30 pounds came off pretty easily, the last 10 was the only part that took some work and only came off after I mostly weaned my son). Am currently pregnant with twins and this time not worried about weight at all! I have confidence that it will come off. If you are normally a healthy & fit person, I would advice you not to be concerned. A pound a week is not a big issue and in fact your body may just be putting on same fat and water weight that you need to support the baby (and prepare for breastfeeding). good luck - it's hard not to be concerned as your body changes and just be prepared that it can take as long as it took you to put on to take off (ie 9 months) but it can come off!

I gained 42 pounds. More than I would have liked, but I focused on eating very healthy and that's just the way it came out. Just because you've gained 35 pounds doesn't mean you're not eating healthy. It all came off in about a year, with little effort on my part. Weight gain tends to slow in the final weeks of pregnancy anyway. You're almost at the end. I would caution you against trying not to gain weight. At this stage of your pregnancy the brain is really developing and needs protein. I think if you're eating healthy, with lots of protein for brain development, that's all you can expect from yourself. Congratulations on your pregnancy and have a happy labor!

I'm due June 25 and have gained about 23 pounds so far. I too am concerned about packing on the pounds in the home stretch. All I can recommend is eating lots of fruits and vegetables and staying far away from salt-- at least if you are like me and retain water very easily. I also try to drink at least 96 ounces of water a day and do moderate cardio 30 minutes 4X a week. I do admit I have a sweet tooth that I indulge pretty regularly.

I am due next week and have gained 60 lbs!! Same as last time and I lost it within 6 months with exercise and healthy diet. You could be holding fluid which makes up for a lot of gain weight also. Don't worry about it too much, if your tests are ok and your OB is not worried you'll be ok

60 lbs, really??? Did you have to gain that much weight per your doctors?

I gained 40 pounds and also exercised everyday and ate really, really well. I, too, worried endlessly, but my doctor reassured me I had nothing to worry about. Anyway, I put on only 3 pounds during the last trimester and lost all of it in the first 6 weeks. I know it's hard, but try not to worry. Oh, and avoid salt. I did throughout the entire pregnancy and never got bloated or to the stage where my rings didn't fit. Good luck.

I assume this person didn't mean to sound unkind.

It's hard to know how to take other people's weight gain unless they give their height, whether they were under or overweight before pregnancy, and how much water they retain.

I gained 48 pounds, much more than I needed, but it was gone within 6 months. Heathy food, especially fiber, and nursing are your friends post-partum...

I gained 40 pounds and have lost all but 9 pounds (3 moths postpartum). I ate very healthfully while pregnant and never really overate, walked several miles a day, did prenatal pilates. I just gained the weigt I needed to gain. And now it is coming off without much effort on my part. So my advice is not to worry too much about the numbers.

Keep in mind that some of the pounds are due to water weight. I am 35 weeks and have gained 36 pounds. I became frustrated at the doctor's office 3-weeks ago when I had put on 4 pounds in one week. My doctor later reassured me that most of my rapid weight was due to the swelling and water retention and not actually excess weight.

Good luck!

60 lbs poster here ... Not offended at all. Never thought of it as too much but I am indeed tall (5.10) and when I am not pregnant I have a healthy weight so I am not too worried. Too be honest I don't even look that heavy, I guess it's a lot of fluid retention and perhaps a bigger baby/lots of fluid?
Hope to drop all the weight by the end of the year!

Such a graceful response to a tacky post. I'm sure you look great and will lose all the weight quickly!

I gained about 35 lbs with my first pregnancy and 45 lbs with my second. I tried to eat healthy and exercised regularly through both. I lost all the baby weight both times. In my case, the second trimester is where I gained the majority of my weight. I think some of it is genetically predetermined -- I pretty much followed in my mother's footsteps -- she normally gained most of her weight in the 2nd trimester also. With one of her pregnancies her doctor was very adamant that she gain only a few pounds. My mom dieted religiously throughout that pregnancy and even took up smoking to help curb her appetite (unfortunately that was the thing in the day). That pregnancy resulted in my sister who is wonderful, but she has always had allergies and poor eyesight unlike the rest of her siblings.

I say as long as you eat a healthy diet, try to only eat when you are hungry, and exercise regularly, you will be fine.

I am just at the end of my first trimester and got worried reading all these posts. But I guess it's all relative to your body. I am petite and weigh a 100lbs, so gaining half my body weight over the next six months isn't really sensible (nor feasible). So clearly, what works for some doesn't work for others (as 17:47 also pointed out).
