How is it not to be Jewish at Sidwell

Anonymous
Ditto from the other thread, except what is it like at Sidwell?

I would rather hear what it's like to BE Jewish there. In the PK class, there are three Jewish kids. So I suspect that this isn't going to get you a universal answer. Everyone else is Hindu, Catholic, Buddhist...

Hmmm. . .Sidwell is a Quaker school isn't it? Seems like Jewish kids would be in the minority.

Not necessarily. If there are many Jewish families, before you know it it will not be a Quaker school.

Sidwell is the place where Episcapalans teach Jews to be good Quakers.

-Washingtonian Magazine.

It was being said a zillion years before Washingtonian said it, about every Quaker school around.

But not more than 50%, so they are indeed a minority.

My goodness, is it that hard to have a few Jewish kids in your class nowadays? Or should all the Jewish families move to Montgomery County where they are more welcome??

Back in the day, when GDS was a second-tier school no where near as strong in academics & college placement as Sidwell, NCS & STA... Sidwell was DEFINITELY the first school of choice for Jewish families. Not judging... Just sayin'

GDS was the choice of Jewish intellectuals - a group of the best and the brightest who came to DC after WWII and through the Kennedy administration. It was an amazing experience to go to school with all those people. That group of parents has been replaces by big firm lawyers, developers and car salesman

SNORT! Why do you suppose GDS wasn't nearly so "strong" in college placement? Poor academics and students? Snort again! Didn't matter how smart or academic you were. Until recently, those factors were NOT the entrance criteria to the Ivy League. Or to other Protestant strongholds. I suppose GDS may have been second tier WRT to exclusivity and snobbery--but you might be surprised about what was second tier WRT intellectual activity. See 16:19.

Schools like GDS and Park started when parents who were looking for a quality education for their children were rejected from other school specifically because of their religious or ethnic heritage.
