Random question. At what age can kids play Scrabble with you?

Anonymous
I love Scrabble, and DH hates board games. Ever since Scrabulous was shut down on Facebook, I haven't been able to satisfy my Scrabble urges. Anyways, I can't wait until DS can play with me (and I really, really hope he inherits my love for board games). Seeing as how he just turned 1, he isn't a worthy opponent quite yet. How old do you have to be before you can play Scrabble? And how long before you become good at it?

And, when you start playing games w/ the kids, do you have to let them win? Or is it better to beat them, so they'll want to get better and beat you?

Probably 2nd/3rd grade is best. It's great for spelling/reading practice. I wouldn't keep score in the beginning, just focus on the words. There is a scrabble junior game although that still requires spelling skills.

DS is 4 and we play with Scrabble pieces (not the board) to spell words.

As for the winning-losing part, we "rig" board games (Chutes and Ladders; Candyland-- yes, kill me now) so that DS usually wins. Honestly, this is mostly to avoid a complete meltdown. While I don't agree with this in principle, we are slowly moving to playing games without the rigging (i.e., we rig less and less often). DS understands that "sometimes we lose, sometimes we win," but there is still a lag between the intellectual grasp and the emotional maturity.

OP, I have a one year old as well and love scrabble. Bring your child by my place some weekend. I'll brew a pot of coffee or open a bottle of wine (depending on whether or not we're on the right side of 5 o'clock) and we'll set our DH's up on a playdate (because men love that) with the kids, and we'll sit ourselves down to some serious Scrabble. The only sad part is how you'll feel when I win every time.

22:51 -- you're on! I can't do it this Saturday, it's DS's birthday party (I wasn't joking when I said he just turned one. It was today.) But I'll be knocking on your door on Sunday if you're serious. I'll even bring the wine.

Don't be talkin' a big game if you don't got the skills though. I'm hungry for some Scrabble fresh meat.

Scrabble is for kids ages 8 and up but my 9 year old would have a hard time really playing it, and he's a good reader.

Scrabble Jr is for kids 5 - 8. They print the words right on the board and have the kids put the letters on top of the words!

Another Scrabble fan whose DH doesn't play. Have you searched for other online sites? I get my fix on Scrabblepro, there might be an equivalent English site.

DC (almost 6) loves Scrabble after seeing me play during family visits. At 4, became interested in joining in so we'd set up a separate board for DC to make words while we played our grown-up game. Also on visits spent time making simple words on the board with great-grandma.

Now we play a modified game pretty often--placing all the tiles face up and taking turns making words (kid words e.g. turkey, jump, zoo, toys). DC is just now learning to build words off mine instead of floating them on the board. Not counting points yet. One tip: we play on a raised-grid board to keep tiles in place.

As for whether to let kiddos win: we started by playing cooperative games and have just gotten to games where there is a winner (Monopoly Jr, Sequence, etc). Rather than let DC win, DC learns the game on a team with an adult, we point out strategy, etc. Though I confess I miss opportunities here and there if a game is headed toward a blowout.

Have fun!

Play the new Scrabble on Facebook - it's pretty good! My son is five and he LOVES to "help" me take my turns in the various games I have going online. Twice in the past week, he has actually seen two words that I didn't and made some good moves (seriously)! I play several turns each day and he loves to watch.

I found my 1st grader playing against the ipad. She wasn't winning, but she had a few good words and had obviously figured out the rules.
