What's your favorite thing in your home?

Our decor can best be described as early-attic, pre basement.

I am taking a day off from work to clean, and realize that our bookshelves our my favorite thing. Loads of books from college and graduate school that I still love. They also remind me of my ridiculous brain mortgage, explaining our 1100 square foot condo housing four people and just a few less toys than books.

You?

Bookshelves too! I just built some and hung them on the wall this weekend (ok, well my dad hung them for me.) I'm so excited to put my books on them!!!

My Grandparents antique desk, nightstands and chairs. My great-grandmothers white washed, hand carved, wooden barometer. Early 1900's French poster that belonged to my Mom.

OP here. Your home sounds lovely, and a tribute to your family. Now, back to cleaning my husband's bachelor IKEA furniture that we still own. Circa 1998. (We are both knocking on 40 with two kids under age three.)

My piano. It's pretty out of tune, and I hope to someday trade it in on a baby grand, but I love it. I rarely get to play by myself, but my 2-year-old loves to do duets on it with me.

Th sharpie marker scribble on our living room wall. I asked my two year old to draw me a picture, and I didn't specifiy where. (I was trying to finish a project.) Reminds me daily of patient parenting, letting the little things go, and how well I handled the situation in the moment.

That said, Sharpies and markers have no place in our house now.

Our Persian rug. Not a family heirloom or anything, in fact, I love it for the opposite reason. DH and I bought it together for our first home. It was the biggest most grownupest purchase I've ever made. I love looking at it every day, and it ties the whole room together. I would love to take it from home to home and one day pass it on to our kids when DH and I are empty nesters in our condo in Florida.

Our new sofa, chair, and ottoman. 17k, and I will get flamed. But I love it.

Thermostatic Valves in my shower - always have hot water when I shower.

Our games cabinet - more for the board games inside than for the cabinet, but it's a very good storage unit.

My armoire/chest of drawers - it's the perfect size for keeping all my folded clothes and actually keeps me a bit more organized than I otherwise would be.

I am assuming this is one you don't have to feed?

My favorite "thing" of the moment is our family wall calendar that specifies Wednesday night as Mom's yoga night. I leave the house. Sometimes I do yoga. Sometimes I sit in a bar and drink a martini with a friend.

Other than that, a quilt I made for my children. It hangs on the wall, and has their pictures with sayings from our crazy Irish family.

can you explain these to me? we ended up buying them for our shower (currently under construction) even though we never could really figure out how they work.

Our coffee table. It was a splurge of mine ten years ago when I started my new job and had to furnish my apartment. The table is gorgeous, real wood, and more expensive than anything I had ever owned. I still remember the thrill of saying I'll take it and paying for it.

As a plus, it turned out to be DH's favorite furniture piece as well. He still sees it as a reminder of my good taste (he needs the reminder when he looks at our blue plaid couch, which he does not care for).
