I was in day 1 of training today as well. Did you spend the latter part of the afternoon working on your personal mission statement? Tomorrow we’re supposed to bring an object to class that “represents the essence” of our mission. We didn’t even talk about students today at all. How is this supposed to help our students? I guess we’ll go through the rest of the 196 pages of the 7 Effective Habits Participant Guide over the next two days.

Yes, they gave us way too long to write our personal mission statements. The whole time I was thinking, "WTF does this have to do with our students?" I have kids who lost parents to COVID, some parents are in jail, other kids have been placed in foster care. We need true SEL strategies to help our students with trauma- not this crap.

That's just it. Respond tp the current need, which isn't teaching leadership skills to kids right now, though it's not clear that's even happening here. It's teaching kids how to cope when they've been under enormous stress for months on end, it's teaching teachers how to teach these skills. My teacher colleagues would so much rather have practical training that gives them the tools to deal with traumatized kids, or even just anxious and stressed kids having a hard time.

Understand most DCUM families can't relate to the school you are at. It was really sad reading the bio's of the kids the first week of school with kids who had lost parents or close relatives to covid, how many were living with relatives vs. families and other struggles they had. MCPS expects teachers to be teachers, parents and social workers to these kids and there just isn't enough time in the day for teachers to do it all. Teachers are not trained at mental health and we need to hire more mental health staff for families who cannot or will not get their kids treatment. Or, the county to expand mental health treatment and have priority spots for MCPS students without insurance.

No, CRT is CRT. For example, a teacher saying "I refuse to teach books written by white men" is a teacher practicing CRT. Saying "whiteness is a system of oppression" is an equity division employee practicing CRT. A principal assigning Stamped, a book written with the purpose if indoctrinating kids to accept policies and practices that will discriminate against them for being white is practicing CRT.

MCPS would have to hire the mental health staff. Most private child therapists don't take insurance, and there's a 6 month or more waiting list at places that do. The system needs more social workers. School counselors don't even have the training unless they're licensed mental health counselors, and perhaps that's something we should think about requiring of counselors going forward.
