That is SOOOO dumb. Your body does NOT know if it is meat or another protein. You feel better because you were probably eating chips, nachos, pasta, bread -- NOT because you were having a balanced meal before. And, meat is NOT healthy. It is not a food choice. Most low-income kids are going to be eating junk meat (hamburger, hot dog meat) at home. If we care about these kids, we would get them HIGH quality protein (veggie protein burgers, beans, tofu) at school. It is NOT nice to FORCE them to eat meat three times a day! |

“ Just because one is vegetarian, it does not mean healthier. The vegetarian stuff in public is far from healthy.”
+1 The processed food companies love this trend toward “plant based” since they can take soy stuff and dress it up in fancy packaging and sell it for more than the products it is imitating. I would view this whole “plant based” push with WAY less skepticism if it was about actually consuming different foods more like actual vegetables and beans rather than super processed products with tons of non-natural ingredients marketed under the “plant based” halo. We eat meat and drink milk and I would be pissed if my school district jumped on the vegan bandwagon to ban both. |
| Most people eat meat, OP. This is not even a question. |
Yes! Not to mention: choice. What choice are the animals given? |
You are a sample-size of one. And it’s only your opinion. A vegetarian diet is better for kids, better for the economy, and better for the environment. There is no planet B ! |
| Honestly, having taught for 10 years in a DC school, I can say that 75% of school lunches end up in the trash anyway. It is so wasteful. |
Landlords are bad? Where would people live if they couldn't afford to buy? |
| My child eats the vegetarian DCPS Sodexo menu at school. Aside from the supply chain issues, the main proteins are about once a week of each: tofu, beans, veggie burger or dog, cheese, and a kid friendly entree like pizza or nachos. Aside from the tofu and veggie burgers (assuming they’re the grainy kind), it’s all pretty standard kid fare. I think you could substitute a few days a week (bean burrito instead of chicken and bean burrito) and it would go mostly unnoticed by the kids. |

I can't believe this thread has gone so long. Most kids aren't vegetarians and won't become one. There are many, many kids who won't touch anything green and would rather starve.
There are other kids who need all the fat, calories, and protein they can get because they don't get much at home. High quality fruits and veggies are also expensive. Most schools don't have the budget for it. |
| I attended a K-6 where all families packed lunches for their children every day, with rare exception for pizza parties and the like. Families with particular dietary preferences can still send snacks and lunches with their children, no? One is always welcome to have preferences, even activism, without others having to go along with it. |
| Because meat is part of a normal human diet. Not necessarily daily, but sometimes. I’ve been a vegetarian for 30 years, but most people are not. |
True story: This thread was started as a troll post. |
| Why do we call it meat? It should be called flesh, or dead animal, or killed animal. That’s what it really is. |
That’s nice. School lunches aren’t changing. Cope. |
