Makes me think of chips |
+1 I also have a diffifcult name (although not Irish). I always have to spell it and pronounce it. I love my name and I don't mind at all. For every person who thinks its a pain there is another who loves having a unique name. If you like the name, go for it. |
I have met the Congresswoman with this name. She is lovely, its a pretty name, but it is very difficult to pronounce from the spelling. It will make your child's life difficult. It is awkward and embarrassing when you constantly have to ask someone how to pronounce their name or forget how to say it right after they told you. It also embarrassing for your child to constantly have their name mispronounced. It has nothing to do with being ethnic. I know lots of unusual ethnic names but I can figure how to pronounce them from the spelling. This is not one that is easy to figure out. I grew up with a difficult to pronounce last name and I hated it. I would have been really upset if I had a first name that caused the same problems. I get your husband is from Mexico but you don't live in Mexico so you need to consider where your child will grow up. If you like the pronunciation of the name, then come up with a spelling that phonetically matches its pronunciation. |
How do you feel about using a nickname? Maybe she could go by Xo?
Otherwise just use it as her middle name. |
Did not read this entire thread. It's a lovely name and I really like the pronunciation and meaning. That said, I have a name that is not intuitive and it is really annoying to never have it spelled or pronounced correctly. I don't let it bother me, but I also gave my children phonetic names because I didn't want to saddle them with a lifetime of corrections and clarifications like I have. Just food for thought. |

Spell it phonetically if you choose it. My name has always been butchered, I am used to it, but Americans in general have really inflexible accents!! |
Well here we go, a whole blog entry (from a very reasonable blogger, IMO) on this very question.
https://appellationmountain.net/name-help-should-we-name-our-daughter-sochi/ Xochi and Xochitl, on the other hand, are used in Mexico. That means we should see some American-born girls by the name. Sure enough, in 2016, 82 Xochitls were recorded, along with six Xochis. Xochi is a recognized variant and much more pronounceable to Americans. People will hesitate over the X, but will get it quickly and will make the substitution in spelling more easily. I’m Team Xochi for you! |
