That's a good question. There will be lots of different answers, temporary and permanent, cobbled-together and structured, safer and less safe. So let's assume that we don't know what every kid is doing, and also assume that some kids will be in less than ideal situations where it will be difficult for them to do the things that DCUM assumes everyone will be able to (or ought to be able to) do. |
No, I’ve just seen this all before. For example, they dumped the entire plan to do hybrid when the union threw a fit. |
Then what is the child doing all day that they can not be online? Sitting in a closet somewhere?!? |
PP, please try to use your imagination a little bit more, to think of possible circumstances involving people who are not you. |
But they just gave EVERY parent their student’s log-in information, right? And I already asked and each class won’t be coded for only certain kids. So basically anyone with or knows a MCPS log-in will have access for 72 hours. And of course it can be recorded by ANY outside device and MCPS will have no way of knowing what outside source recorded it. If they know if anyone recorded it at all. The stories of kids rocking back and forth in nightgowns on their bed during Zooms and where they ended on the Internet is disgusting. This will be a massive shit show. |
Without parents there, the child could be doing anything. That’s really why prioritizing in-person school is essential. |
It's a diverse county. There will be kids in a lot of different situations. Like on snow days, I imagine some children will end up going to work with a parent. Internet access won't necessarily be available. Other kids will be at daycares or babysitters. Again, internet access might not be available, and even if it is, it might not be possible for the provider to supervise the other children while simultaneously staying near a student that's doing online classes (e.g., if others are doing outdoor activities). And even if that's not a problem, young children might not have sufficient support from caregivers to get online and deal with technical issues. I also suspect some older children will ultimately be responsible for caring for their younger siblings while their parents are at work. |
| It's sort of amazing how many out-of-touch people are in Montgomery County that can't imagine what it's like to lead a non-privileged life. Are we seeing a particularly obtuse cross-section on DCUM? |
You are obviously free to do that, but it’s not like there is no consequence. It means your kid won’t be able to interact with the teacher and other students outside of breakout groups. That means they are going to get less out of class. |
| Posted this in another thread, but may be of interest here. I just listened to a presentation from my kid's elementary school. If you opt out of being recorded, your child has camera and microphone off in the main classroom. But they are encouraged to use reactions, respond to polls, and use the chat window to participate. In addition, breakout rooms aren't recorded, so they can have camera and microphone on there. Recordings will be posted for 72 hours in the Canvas classroom, so access should be limited to only those students who are in that classroom. If you don't show up live and instead view the recordings later, there's a way to confirm to the office that you "attended" and you need to do some sort of discussion/engagement activity for your teacher to show that you were engaged with the learning. |
I imagine 2-3 teens tops in first period high school class. 😂 |
Agree! I feel bad for the high school teachers. This is a disaster. |
DCUM's gonna DCUM. |
Didn’t I read somewhere that the chat function would be disabled? |
I saw that too. So now screens off, but chats on.
