I've priced Aldi and Costco and for us they are nearly the same, costco is a few cents cheaper but you have to buy 18 rather than 12 (which is good for us because 12 isn't enough and 24 is too much). Costco has more reliable quality control than Aldi overall on many products. |
If you live very far from one, and can't afford to shop there anyway, I agree it isn't worth it. Somehow, I don't think that was the question. |
It's $700. |
I don’t know about Giant, but Safeway often has bonuses with the gas rewards (eg, double points on produce or 4 has rewards if you spend $60 in a single trip) so it may not take a full $700 to get 70 cents of rewards. |
Giant doesn't have that. And way to quibble about a completely extraneous point. |
So you have to spend $700 to get 70 cents off of one gas fill-up? But you think it's a better deal than Costco? Ok. |

There are countless money and home bloggers who have done supermarket vs costco and Aldi vs costco shopping trips.
Costco wins out most of the time (I read a ton of them before we joined to make sure it was a better deal). The supermarket wins out with the craft coupon clippers. |
Agree on the quality control. Costco produce tends to be fresh and of high quality. Maybe we just eat a lot of fruits/veggies, and in fairness I try to stick to things I know everyone will eat, but we rarely have trouble using it up because it lasts longer than average. I've tried Aldi a few times and maybe it's just the one I go to but the produce always looks kind of sad off the bat and they never have half of what I need anyway. So then I wonder about the freshness of other items. |
| I love the turkey sandwiches in the snack bar. Best 3.99 I’ve spent all week. |
| It's not worth it just because I hate going there. I'm so glad I dropped the membership. |
Not exactly, you get 10 cents a gallon for every $100 spent. Since this is my regular grocery store, and I spend multiples of that monthly, it is a pretty good deal. |
That's 70 cents/per gallon. 20 gallon tank = $14 |
