| Is it possible grandpas vision is impaired and he didn’t realize the window was open? I have elderly parents and could totally see how they could miss this if busy playing with the child and not paying attention. |
Isn't he in his 50s? Is that really "elderly"? And if he is that impaired then why was he holding her and walking around? |
No. And don’t let them carry your kids around. |
Have you ever stood on a balcony or RIGHT in front of an open door/window like 10 stories up? Even if your vision is impaired, one will absolutely feel the air/breeze. That's probably why he lifted the girl up in the first place, otherwise there is zero reason to lift her up when she could look out from the ground. He just lost his grip and flaked. A fatal flake, likely unintentional, but this is 10000% user error. Blaming the cruise line is only going to delay and make the grief worse for the parents, I think. |
Well I don’t think anyone assumes grandpa is going toss the baby out the window. JFC. People hand babies and kids off to their elderly parents all the time and 99% of the time nothing bad happens. |
PP here and I’m not blaming the cruise line I’m still blaming the grandfather but obviously it was just a horrible mistake. If it were my mother or father I just know how absolutely traumatic and horrible this would be on them, and I would probably instinctually blame everyone but them just to ease the guilt if nothing else. |
You’d also take every single opportunity *just after the death of your child* to talk to the popular press and sue the cruise line? |
Somebody needs to tell the family that blaming everyone but grandpa's human error isn't "easing" anything. All it's doing is delaying reality and likely making the grief worse. |
Absolutely NOT. I was on that very ship about 3 months earlier & it's extremely apparent which windows are open. Firstly, the windows go tinted, then clear, tinted, then clear all the way down the line. You know if a window is clear it meant that it opened. Secondly and definitely more importantly, the trade winds are SO strong on the water, a blind person would be able to tell if their window was open based on the warm, wet, salty air that's coming towards you like a fan is blowing it on you. These windows are chest height and higher, he would have had to pull her all the way up to his chest & most likely, stood her feet on the railing. She may have lost her balance, her head would have toppled forward since its heaviest & he may not have had a good grip on her & she slipped. Such a tragedy. |
It’s impossible to have missed public opinion here that grandpa is at fault. The family doesn’t care. They dug in right away and immediately filed their lawsuit. |
This. The whole thing is so bizarre. I think they had their ambulance chaser engaged before they even went home for the funeral. |

Lawyer says they are waiting to file their lawsuit until they see the CCTV footage of the fall. Wonder why that is?
Also says "“there are safety regulations that exist regarding windows to prevent children from falling out.” Uh yeah - make them 5 feet off the ground. https://people.com/crime/chloe-wiegand-cruise-death-grandfather-charged-family-stands-behind-him/ |

I wonder what will happen to this family when it's all over. The lawsuit isn't going to go anywhere. They've just delayed their grief and have hopes of making money off of this. Grandpa has been charged which is going to be difficult. I imagine they've lost friends because of their behavior.
Out of everyone in this story, I think the lawyer is the worst. What kind of human being do you have to be to prey on grieving families!? He swooped in before the ink was even dry on the death certificate and.convinced this family someone else is to blame and they can get rich off of it. Now that's all falling apart |
Yes, this is something I always found strange. The safety regulation is that no child would be able to lean out the window unless an adult held them up to it. I get the family is grieving and looking to blame anyone but grandpa, but goodned their arguments and "I didn't know the window was open" just make them look like idiots |
Interesting comment by the lawyer “They stand 100 percent behind [the grandfather] and his version of events that he thought this was a wall of windows,” attorney Michael Winkleman tells PEOPLE.“ Grandpa’s statement shouldn’t be a “version of events” it should be the truth. What really happened. |
