Oakland Terrace

You ask and answer your own questions as if you were multiple posters. You sound like a pain the *ss and no wonder no teacher wants you in their classroom. I certainly wouldn't. I can do my job just fine without you, thank you very much.

How many people on this board want volunteers at their desk/office/medical practice/wherever?? Especially ones who will not shut up?

There are multiple posters here who share the same concerns, especially on basics like communication.

If you are a hands off parent who prefers the school take care of everything, then OTES is a perfect for you and your children. If you child is getting all their needs met, that's great. And, none of this is relevant to you.

Again, same poster writing multiple posts.

EXACT same writing style.

How is everyone finding their year at OTES so far?

Fantastic. DC acclimated well, and we've had a good experience with KAH. The communication with the teachers at the open houses was great and provided a lot of insight into their day-to-day. Her reading has already gotten so much better. She's excited to go each day so that's a plus.

I'm also really liking the parents so we've formed friendships that will hopefully last!

Very well for us, too! DS is super excited about the Spanish immersion and is having a great time (knock wood). DD isn't over the moon about her teacher this year, but is happy socially, and, so far, so good (knock wood again).

We've also really enjoyed getting to know families with other Kindergartners; that didn't happen for whatever reason with our oldest, and so I'm grateful that it is now.

We are having a great year too. My son's first grade teachers are so much better and more communicative than his K teachers, and he loves first grade. I have also gotten involved with the PTA. Seems like the school is what you put into it.

Your post is really offensive and not a low income school.

Well it isn’t an affluent school. It is a Wheaton school that has more SFHs than the avg for that part of the county even if if they run on the cheaper side. But the problem remains with decent elementary schools in marginal areas (as always) is the next level and the level after that when they combine with the not so decent schools that the local parents were happy to avoid initially.

DP, but you're wrong on most counts. OTES is in Silver Spring, and pretty much all of its students live in SS or Kensington. Plenty of OTES parents happily send their kids to DCC middle and high schools.

It's not affluent in the way that W-elementary feeders are, for sure. For some of us, that's part of the appeal.

There are ~22 homes for sale in bounds for Oakland Terrace right now. One $1m, two in the $900s, two around $800k, two in the mid-$700s, one in the $600s, seven in the $500s, six in the mid-400s, and one for $375k. Half of Oakland Terrace pulls from Kensington, half from Silver Spring. There are a few apartment complexes in bounds but it's largely SFHs. If that's"low income" to you, sure.

I've heard negative things about Oakland Terrace from several parents who have had kids there. I'm not surprised that there are multiple posters who are posting about problems.

Because this area doesn't have a town-based local government like New England does, you can argue until the cows come home about whether any particular area is Wheaton or Kensington or Silver Spring. You can go by the zip code, but they don't mean anything in terms of local government, and if you write Silver Spring, 20902 or Wheaton, 20902, your letter will arrive at the same house. Kensington actually has a Town of Kensington with municipal boundaries, but no one in the actual town is currently assigned to OTES. Plenty of people in the delivery zone for 20895 are. These local designations mean almost nothing around here. That is why southern Rockville can be re-branded as North Bethesda, etc. Although the City of Rockville also has municipal boundaries, I don't know many people who actually know where they are. So arguing about what is Wheaton and what is Kensington and what is Silver Spring is kind of silly.

Just like you can be branded a W-parent, snob, sophisticated, elitist, or run of the mill DCUM trash. Still the same POS though.

Most of the families we know make $140-300K or more. Just because we don't choose to live in fancy overpriced houses doesn't mean we are poor.

Can't wait to move on...no communication, no idea what is going on at school. Nothing.
