Should I be concerned if my "5" kid seems to be on a downward slope? High 5s in 3rd, mid 5s in 4th, low 5s in 5th.

How did your DC do compared to other students in the same level as DC since last year? I would be concerned if there is a downward slope.

My excellent Math students sloped down with a 5. Turned out that he miscalculated the time (basing it off of the wall clock). He walked out 20 minutes earlier and was not able to get to all the questions. He was at an 85 percentile for the 5s. Not a big deal since he is a rising 9th grader in a good program, but this was great lesson learned in terms of trying to control for such factors when taking an exam. He needed to confirm when the test will end before the test started. He needed to speak up and advocate for himself!

Because all kids don't get fives.

I don't care what others kids score.

So you just mean public school is too easy for your kid.

Anonymous wrote:My 3rd grader scored 850, the highest score in the 5 range, in math. How common is this? We knew math came easily to him but we’re wondering now if he needs some special extra enrichment to fulfill his math desires. I’m truly not trying to be insufferable here. Our other child has never scored anything like this so we’re in new territory.

DD got 850, too. So did her best friend. So it's not that uncommon. Sorry.

As I recall, rather than testing to see if you knew grade level material, they tested to see what grade level you were at. Rather than having extensive test prep, we were specifically told that there was no way to study for them; we should just relax and do our best.

Yes, I remember getting scores with grade and month, like 10th grade, 4th month.

We are in Northwood cluster, and received MS scores yesterday.

Are scores of 840-850 more common in the lower grades or do students who scored that high in elementary usually continue to school that high?

Statistically it's rare.

My kid’s PARCC scores were way lower percentile wise than his MAP scores. He’s mid to high 4 on PARCC but 99th% by a lot on MAP. The writing seems to have really thrown things off.

My kid's ELA dropped from high 5 in 3rd to a 4 in 4th as she was struggling to learn strategies for essay writing. At that stage, writing was definitely her weakest point. It went back up in 5th.
