Boston U full scholarship vs. Yale full price

OP we are making college choices now. Full FA at several schools. Oddly you feel those schools are not the best! It's a psychological feeling that many have according to a radio podcast from UPENN. it's Yale! But the road of med school is long hard and expensive. If she hates premed she can always transfer or change majors. But the 7 year med offer will never be repeated. Your DD is lucky and smart.

Literally, exactly correct. What do they call the very worst med-school applicant from the senior class at Yale? Doctor. There is just zero comparison between Yale and BU.

I think he started and sold a clinic or something. He is semi retired and enjoying life. I don't think an IVY would have improved his life.

Where one goes to Med School is a totally different question. Which Med School barely matters. Over 90% of all graduating MDs are automatically placed by the national matching system. This is about undergrad. Undergrad labels count, period.

No, many of us care where our docs went to medical school. Undergraduate, not so much.

Given the med acceptance, b.u. is the only reasonable sane choice. God forbid she opts for yale, you pay for it, she gets rejected to med school, your other kids loose option for college, then everyone is worse off and probably in debt. For what purpose and to what end, a "brand"? Take a big whiff of fresh air and wake up.
Good luck to your DD.

Lol, my roommate from JMU is now a very successful MD. You're talking nonsense.

I definitely care about medical school - and undergrad if they share it.

"Brand"? It's not like you're comparing handbags.

Medical school acceptances are mostly based on GPA and test scores. A pre-med grad from Harvard doesn't have that big of an advantage over a BU pre-med grad (assuming they have similar stats). Though, it might be a better overall experience at a wealthier school, with smaller classes, more access to research opportunities and relationships with faculty, etc. The pre-med programs at average schools also tend to have brutal weed-out courses.

Do people here not realize how good BU is? O_o BU is one of the most prestigious colleges in the country. It's not a full ride at Podunk U vs Yale. The top 25% of students at BU could easily be students at the Ivies in terms of academic performance and potential.

No, where one goes to nursing or perhaps dental school rarely matters. But medical school DOES matter.

Anonymous wrote:He got the Trustee Scholarship at BU, right? That puts him at the top 20 students in his class. He's going to have every door at BU open to him. He can send an email to any faculty member letting them know of his status, and he'll be offered research positions on the spot. He'll be showered with personal attention and recognition. He'll definitely be the biggest fish there, whereas he may be average/slightly above it at Yale.

There's a lot of sense in picking BU, but the residential and magical undergrad of Yale is one of a kind. To me, Yale is probably the best undergraduate education one could find in the world. They really are blessed with a lot, and the students there are so talented and incredible. If costs aren't a matter, despite all that BU will come with, I would choose Yale myself. If going to Yale meant talking out substantial loans, I'd probably try to find a way to finance it. Yale is one of those schools that pays lifelong dividends. There are only maybe 7 or so schools like that- Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, MIT, Oxford, Cambridge. If this were between BU and Northwestern, or BU and Williams, it'd be different. But Yale is at a whole another level.

You assumed the child was a male.

Hardly. Nationally set standards. State standards on top. This is a fact. No one is "sneaking" into med school on less than stellar qualif. And as long as one is board certified, are all bd certified held to same standard? Board certified is all that matters in my doctors. I could care less if umd vs g.u. vs gwu

Brand puts the issue in a very realistic light. To miss that is to miss thw whiff of fresh air reality check that the name of the institution is not work impoverishing a family possibly, and when they are comfotable right now. But many things can change in 4 years. I am living proof of that.
