How do I explain this election to my 1st grader?

In case all of you haven't noticed, the people who are acting crazy are not the ones who voted for Trump.

Please don't do this to your sweet innocent child

Tell your kid we have a democratic process this is how it works. Also, reiterate that there is always a winner and a loser. Not everyone gets a sticker. You win some, you lose some, and you move on.

Use an American history textbook. The procedure for the electoral college vote is in the constitution. The 2000 election is a good precedent for a candidate winning the popular and losing the general election. Make it academic. Not emotional.

We discussed because it's important for her to start understanding how elections work, the issues, and how we make our decisions. She also heard from a friend that "not letting babies be born is murder" so people should vote Trump.

What did I say this morning? That I was sad. The people made a huge mistake. But, that under our system, that sometimes happens. I also told her why my values led me to the belief that Trump would be a terrible president; but other people thought otherwise. And, we have to change things in 4 years.

Yeah. I hope you did a better job explaining that. The people made a huge mistake allowing her to run and win the nomination. Hillary, not Trump, made this election horrible. She really and truly is a nasty woman.

Yeah, no, I didn't. I told the truth. The people -well, a minority of them in any event- made a mistake. But, we have another say in this in 4 years. You can disagree with that and tell your own kids differently.

You're an awful person yourself, with that last sentence. You need to reflect a little and make some of that "change" you want so badly within yourself.

If you muslim/hispanic friend is here legally and does not have ties with terrorism, they will be just fine.
But yeah it may be a good idea to take off your hijab if you are in a secular country (don't tell him that).

Do you feel the same way about people wearing crosses or yarmulkes?

If they started complaining about being scared to wear them, I would.

When people start accusing other Americans of being terorists just because they are wearing cosses or a yarmulkes, they, too, will have a very good reason to be scared.

+ 1

I love it when people who supported for a candidate who, among othrr things, mocked another human being for having a disability have the nerve ti call the other candidate nasty
