How do I explain this election to my 1st grader?

You're blaming Hillary for exposing the man that is now your children's president. Maybe if you had listened to your children we wouldn't be in this mess.

I didn't vote for him.

Her ad upset a lot of kids unnecessarily.

If you muslim/hispanic friend is here legally and does not have ties with terrorism, they will be just fine.
But yeah it may be a good idea to take off your hijab if you are in a secular country (don't tell him that).

Our beloved nanny was born in Guatemala. She is here legally. She has been here for decades. On her way to go vote she was pulled over for allegedly going 31 in a 25, and detained for so long that the polling place closed before she could get there. She is now terrified and saying she wants to move back to Guatemala in January. It's terrible.

No, HIS WORDS upset a lot of kids.

And it is necessary, because he's the president now. They should get used to being scared.

I agree, but to my teens... I have said and will continue to say that in DC we are insulated from racism and sexism.

But plain and simple once you get away from the city and educated people. People are racist and women are not treated as equal.

I wouldn't say that to a 1st grader, but I won't sugar coat it for my teen.

Sorry to break it to you, but DC is plenty racist.

No.

Hillary's ad with the specific reference to Trump and nuclear weapons is what upset so many kids.

Almost everyone who has mentioned having a worried young child has said that their kid was specifically upset about nuclear war.

That did not come from Trump. That came from Hillary and her ads.

"Yesterday the voters elected a new President. HIs name is Donald Trump. He will be our President for the next four years starting in mind January. In November 2020, voters will have a chance to have him stay President for another four years, of elect someone else."

"Would you like a snack?"

We will try again in four years. Meantime, pack all your favorite things; we're moving to Scott's house in Canada."

More lazy people voted for Hillary Clinton, you know the person who had no clue how to keep top secret information and then she lied about it? Luckily, the framers of our Constitution created something called the electoral college and they chose Donald Trump.

Why am I 1,000% confident that you would have posted the EXACT OPPOSITE if Hillary had won the EC and Trump the popular vote?

We discussed because it's important for her to start understanding how elections work, the issues, and how we make our decisions. She also heard from a friend that "not letting babies be born is murder" so people should vote Trump.

What did I say this morning? That I was sad. The people made a huge mistake. But, that under our system, that sometimes happens. I also told her why my values led me to the belief that Trump would be a terrible president; but other people thought otherwise. And, we have to change things in 4 years.

How do you know "the people" made a mistake. Talk again in a few years before you spew hate to your child, who probably went in and same the same opinionated crap to her classmates.

Exactly. I would be more concerned why your child is friends with families that break federal laws and try and cheat a system that many others wait and do the right way. Have you explained that to them? Probably not.

In the meantime, we need to be good leaders because local/community leadership and action are more important than an election that happens once in four years. We need to work with all the leaders in our country to support and help each other.

We can also talk about checks and balances.

I also added with my second grader a reminder that he should always be kind and if he sees another kid getting made fun of, he should be brave and step in.

This is what I told my 6 year old. It is his job to stand up for what is right no matter who is in charge. And that now this is going to be our new president and we need to respect him even if sometimes we don't agree with him.

We campaigned for HRC and he was also in tears this am. I'm not sure why that is so shocking to PPs here.

The adults made a big mistake, junior. Out of all the millions of people in the country, they chose two horrible candidates and forced Americans to choose between them. Either the female criminal who was rotten to the core or the perma-tanned used car salesman type.

The Americans chose the guy who at least wasn't going to go to jail before his first term in office was up. He was also the candidate that promised to listen to the concerns of people who were ignored by the mainstream media.

So, now we need to support the orange man and try again in 4 years to elect a decent human being.

Yes it is ... but my teens don't see it like they see it when we travel. They don't see rebel flags in the windows and mammy figurines in diners.

Do you see that in DC?

Why? Are they illegal aliens? My Hispanic friends voted for Trump and their children aren't worried or sad at all.

No they are legal but everywhere we go with our soccer team kids tell them to go back to their country or random white dudes start talking to them in Spanglish... thought it would get better... i guess it will be "great again".
