DAYS at a time? Where did they go to the bathroom?

Yeah - unless you have toilet trained your dog I'm calling BS on this.

No joke, when I was looking to adopt a dog, I checked out a dutch shepherd that had been surrendered to a rescue by her first owner because the dog was too hyper. The owner explained to the rescue that the dog was really great, she could crate the dog for an entire long weekend and the dog would poop and pee in one corner of the crate and barely get itself dirty by curling up as far as possible in the other corner of the crate. She thought it was a great "selling point" for the dog and didn't understand why the rescue wasn't super cool with encouraging the next owners to do the same.

Some people are really, truly, stupendously stupid.

My mom's dog absolutely hates to travel or leave the house or be kenneled. So they leave her in a bathroom with a walk in shower. She will pee and poop only in the shower for the weekend and is happy as a clam that she was left. My dog would self injure.

Apparently the girl went out of town more weekends than she stayed and the dog was always just left in the crate, starting when the dog was a puppy.

I didn't end up adopting the dog because she was just such a mess. She was a sweet dog but had so many issues, behavioral and physical, even after a year of intense work by the rescue to rehab her.

I don't do this, but if you have a doggy door, your dogs can relieve themselves/come inside to get warm for a few days.

I have one dog who can self-feed; that is, he won't devour all his good at once. The other dog would eat until she exploded. So leaving food out doesn't work for all dogs.

They're DOGS!! My kids ride horses that wear a blanket and stay in the pasture through this weather.

A horse that lives outside all year long is not the same as a dog (social animal, by the way, who is used to living in a pack) who is used to living in a temperature controlled environment with humans.

It's fine that you don't like animals in your house. Don't offer for them to stay. But suggesting it is okay to leave dogs in a house with no heat when the temperature dips down to 17 degrees is ridiculous. Montgomery County just instituted fines for people who leave their dogs outside in the winter. If you can be fined for leaving your dog in a dog house outside in the winter, then how is it okay to leave the dog in an equally cold house while you take comfort somewhere else?

You obviously have no understanding of Thermodynamics. Have you ever even had a Science course?

Yes. I've also lost power in February. And while my house didn't get as cold as outside, it dipped down to 30 degrees. The law in Montgomery County applies to winter in general. So if someone can be fined for leaving their dog outside in 40 degree temperatures, how is that different from leaving them inside a house that is 40 degrees?

I don't know why people get so nasty on this board and toss around insults. Guess what? I'd rather freeze to death than stay with people who think it's fine if a dog dies because they don't want to be made uncomfortable for a few days.

Do you know that people go camping with dogs in sub-freezing temperatures? The dogs survive, as do the people. But according to you, if they camped in a Montgomery County park with their dogs, they'd be charged with a crime?

I'm fairly confident most sane people aren't taking their pugs hiking and camping in frigid temperatures. Not everyone has a dog that can endure those conditions.

Op - to your question: Either extend the offer to your friends/neighbors and let them make the call. I hear your power is out, We have power, HOWEVER since I'm allergic to animals I can only have you/spouse/kids. They make take you up/turn you down. Not a problem. I do not expect people to allow my animal in their house. The only time I've ever asked someone was when the power was out for a week during the derecho and my house was 85+ degrees (and rising), because my pug will go into distress (due to her smushed nose) and my go-to's (and her vet) were also out of power. But the people who said no, said no - end of story, I didn't guilt them.

Or don't extend an invitation. You know these people best - you'll know the right call. Just be upfront about what you can and can not offer.
There's been a lot of unnecessary drama on this thread.

You're a hideous human being. You don't have to like pets or invite them but to lack the understanding that an animal needs heat, food and shelter like any other living thing? Gross. Asshole.

I understand it, I simply don't care bc I think the needs and even the comforts of humans trump those of pets. So if it's about you and your human family being warm and comfortable and your dog runs into issues in a cold house - well you know you can BUY another dog, right? It can be replaced unlike a human.
