Do many Sidwell families belong to the Chevy Chase Club?

Why can't it exist for its members enjoyment? If you aren't trying to become a member, why should any of this matter? Go somewhere that you want to be and do the things that you want to do.

I am sure that there are plenty of places that wouldn't want me as a member but I don't spend a second of time thinking about it. How is this different than trying to get into a private school or a college (both things where connections can play a part)?

It doesn't matter to me, but I do totally judge it. Just like I judge people who join all white or all men's golf clubs. I'm just really unimpressed.

I think that there is some general opinion here, shared by a lot of people who have never been inside this circle and make assumptions about what goes on - I can assure you, it is a lot like going to a restaurant or bar where everybody knows you and you feel comfortable while sharing common interests.

Let me correct that for you--it is a lot like going to a restaurant WHERE EVERYBODY IS WHITE, PRIVILEGED, AND CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO THINK TOO DEEPLY ABOUT RACISM.

I'll be sure to share this observation with all of our black and Jewish friends at our club. Are you in some sort of time warp??

According to a good friend of mine on the board at Chevy, there are only TWO black members! Can't speak to the number of Jews.

Wow, Chevy has come a long way since the days of discrimination.

And they even have Indian members now too - gasp!

I loved doing BOTH growing up. I had Jewish friends who went to Mrs. Simpsons, and especially in recent years have seen Jewish and black people at Chevy and they are welcomed by everyone.

It's funny because I doubt people would get mad if there was a Jewish club that discriminated against Christians.

Not saying racism is okay, AT ALL. But the majority of people who go to Chevy bear no ill will to any groups. They just so happened to be raised in a certain set and want their kids to carry the tradition. All this hate over what are two lovely institutions.

How about any Latins/Hispanics or Asians? Genuinely curious.

According to this article,
the CCC is still essentially all white, or close to it.[/quote

Ok, I have finally hit my limit. We are an AA family and belong to CCC. In addition, DH's family belongs to an equally "exclusive club" which I will not name for fear of outing myself. We belong to CCC for the same reasons any other family joins any sort of club-for golf, tennis, swim team and ice hockey for the kids, etc.....
I have read Mr. Sisson's article and it is as outdated now as it was 6 years ago. Mr. Sisson is tilting at windmills.
We live in a meritocracy people! Many clubs are expensive. That alone has a self-selecting impact. Work hard and enjoy the fruits of those labors. Not everything is racism.
(and I have never referred to it as Chevy)

Super refreshing.

Um, to all the members posting who said the club is not referred to as Chevy, the kids hockey team tshirts (not uniform) say Chevy ...

She calls it "the Club."

Just a quick reminder for all of you: reverse racism is not a thing.
Country clubs are often institutionally racist.

I always thought I would want my kids to go there, but I heard it had changed so we didn't apply. We don't want the country club set.

Same here (I'm pp). It used to be an interesting place. Now it's full of social climbing wannabes.

Can't speak for Sidwell, but as a legacy & member the club but whose family has NEVER made the "country club" set a priority, I appreciate the diversity at the Cathedral schools. My kids are in the lower school at NCS & STA (and they previously went to beauvoir), One recent trend which I find refreshing and the opposite of "social climbing," NOT ONE of ds & dd's classmates are enrolled in the "invitation only" Mrs. Simpson's, but instead opted for the all-inclusive Capital Cotillion. I know I chose Cotillion over Mrs. Simpson's. From what I've heard the stonewalling of Mrs. Simpson's is quite new. Even a few years back, there would be a handful of students in each grade who attended to Mrs. Simpson's... in this year's 4th grade there are none (ZERO) Cathedral students at Mrs. Simpsons. We felt uncomfortable with the idea of sending dc to a dancing school where not all of his/her classmates were welcome. Take that social climbers!

OMG, Buffy, break out your Lily Pulitzers now -- the revolution will be televised and those PYG prints are going to look fabulous in HD!

1 out of the 200 or so couples I know.

We also have 3 SFS students/grads, and I'd agree that Sidwell's culture doesn't lean toward the country club set (one thing we like about the school), but we definitely know more than 1 family with club membership -- though none from Chevy -- there are actually quite a few Woodmont families, plus some Congressional and Bethesda folks, as well as Kenwood, which I'm guessing "real" CC members shudder to see listed in the same category.

Yeah, but they're trying to climb a different ladder in which CCC is not a rung. And, BTW, isn't social climbing the official sport of upper-middle-class Washingtonians? I mean, where are you going to avoid this?
