Opting out of PARCC testing in DC?

No one said that. Go back and re-read. VALIDATION COMMITTEE.

Fail to see any real relevance to anything of substance. Again, there were MANY mathematicians involved in developing the Common Core math standard, and MANY mathematicians involved in review and feedback toward improving it. You are presenting just ONE GUY's opinion.

Don't be this idiot, with a cockamamie "opt out" plan...

Basically their plan was to have their kid show up for the test, unseal the packet, log in to the computer, and then get up and leave the testing room. (That's not really "opting out" or "boycotting" the test, it's starting the test and not answering it, which defaults to "test taken but failed by the student")

And the parent would then show up unannounced and demand their kid be sent home with the parent and if the kid wasn't there in 10 minutes, they called 9-1-1 and reported a "kidnapping."

Frickin clueless nutcases.

This is INSANE. The school has no right to refuse to allow a child's parent to remove them from the premises -- for any reason. Such incredible stupidity.

Then don't ask for heavens sake! Neither your teacher nor your principal should give you irregular, if not illegal guidance. DC does not have an opt-out procedure and probably never will. That doesn't mean you can't keep your child home, write them sick, or take other measures you feel are important to you or your child. I know parents of Kindergarteners who feel their kids should not have homework and refuse to do it with them. This is no different. Just don't raise such a fit about it and don't expect any signatures of validations for such action. It's your responsibility and yours to suck up.

Horrible advice. Parents have been opting their kids out of DC standardized tests for years, including the DC-CAS right before this messed up PARCC test. The lack of the District having a formal procedure doesn't mean parents need to just "suck it up" -- or it shouldn't!! Not for those of us who want to stand up and say something when we think the school system is not serving our children well -- for ANY reason.

This kind of sheer nonsense is what has us looking to private school for next year -- far earlier than we were ever planning to. Amazing how efficient government is at one thing: messing things up.

OK. So this group of geniuses, looking to ultimately VALIDATE the Common Core curriculum only puts one mathematician on the VALIDATION COMMITTEE. Already stupid. Then when that one mathematician gives them chapter and verse as to why the MATH STANDARD ARE WHOLLY INADEQUATE, they approve them anyway.

If that's a process you're happy standing behind and defending, good for you, I guess!! I'm not. Not good enough for my kids -- sorry.

Your "friend" is a drama queen who is doing more harm than good. Depressed over taking a test? Very doubtful unless your "friend" has been filling "her" daughter's head with a load of crap. Is the test silly and meaningless? Probably. Will it pose irreparable harm? Probably not. If your "friend" doesn't like the fact of standardized testing and refuses to participate then I have two words for "her": private school.

So nasty. And filled with innuendo. Do you feel better? Feel good about yourself? Sad.

Put on your big girl pants if you're going to post on DCUM.

Why does a family looking into opting out of standardized testing for whatever reason make people so angry? There is deep psychology here. Something to do with upholding the status quo and a fear of the "common people" exercising their rights.

Fear of people exercising their common sense and critical thinking skills rather than just doing as their government commands!

Real Tea Party Patriots with Tin Foil Hats. If you don't want you kiddo to take the test, fine. Just stop pretending it's something more than that.

"Tin Foil Hats" -- this attack is a dead giveaway for extremists.
