What families qualify for financial aid?

I can imagine it, and it's a nightmare. It's the "in between" families that give the Top 3 schools the grounding and semblance of reality that our family seeks for our 2 children.

Yes!!!!

If you want to see how this plays out, check out some of the non Top 3 schools that are unable to provide aid to the in between families. You have the super rich on one end and a sprinkling of very poor on the other end, with nothing in the middle. There is nothing healthy about this for anyone. Class warfare abounds. It is much healthier, and from an education standpoint, valuable, to have an in between group. They act as a bridge among other things, between the two ends of the spectrum.

Why should parents sacrifice what they see as a rewarding career that utilizes their education just to send their kids to private school? I understand sacrificing for college but not private school. I don't get it.

I'm not sure I understand your point here because it sounds like you are insinuating that admins are dumb. I am an admin, I certainly do not consider myself to be stupid. I work my butt off and scratch every last penny together to send my child to a DC private that is well over 20k a year (AND I WAS NOT AWARDED ANY FINANCIAL AID) because I want a better life for DC with more job choices than I had.

I apologize if my job offends you and I am very happy I am not your admin.

Some parents are totally hung up on their own personal aspirations. Some parents actually choose a job that may not be ideal in terms of pay so they can spend more time w/ their family. I used to be a teacher and now do admin work. I am very happy w/ my choice. I don't see it as a sacrifice at all. Also, I think the ES years are very important. If kids don't have an good solid academic foundation, they won't need that money you are socking away for college b/c they may not even make it there!
