Should DC apply to UMD? (and does it feel very "big")

I just like the name UMD. sounds like U medical Doctor.

UVA sounds like cancer causing radiation and UNC sounds like University of No Cortex .

I want her to be a comfortable driving distance away (under 7-8 hrs). She has plenty of reaches-for-all on her list. Lots of NE schools- she loves cooler weather and I love that they're not that far. She doesn't have strong opinions on the size of the school other than small LACs do not appeal to her, and mid-size sounds good.

I think she would be fine with the relatively larger size of UMD... I also think the size on paper doesn't always match how one experiences a campus.

For those whose kids attend(ed)- did it feel very big?
And just more generally... Do you think DC should add UMD to her list as a Target? If your kid went OOS (or was accepted), was merit aid offered? Thank you!

My kid is a rising junior at UMD from junior. He loves it there. Never given us the impression that the school is "too large". He received some merit which makes the cost comparable to the two most expensive in-state schools. Did the honors college thing for a year. Active in club sport and academic club. Moving off campus to a "new-ish" high within walking distance. Hes a CS major which falls into the school of natural sciences and mathematics. College Park is a little rough, but there's a little downtown next to campus which is quite popular. Fake IDs are plentiful! Campus is nice. Can't say enough good things other than perhaps beltway traffic to get there.

What were their stats when they applied to Umd fromVA?

It's a target on my DD's list. It is very easy for in state high stats.

I know several in-state straight A high rigor, 1600 SAT kids who did not get accepted to UMD. In Maryland, UMD is now a reach school even for high stats kids.

True, but UMD recently changed the factors that it looks at when making admission decisions. It’s new factors include things like English as a second language, family educational history, gender, socioeconomic background, and extenuating circumstances. It clearly is looking beyond stats when making admissions decisions.

You know several kids with 1600 SAT and straight As? They disclose their grades, scores and their admission decisions?

+1
A sure sign of BS is when posters claim to know all of this information about other people’s kids.

No you don’t. You absolutely do not know “several“ kids with perfect SAT scores who were denied University of Maryland.

The poster might not "know" several kids with perfect SAT scores, but you can see these rejections in the Naviance scattergrams if they do exist.

W&M has less than 10K kids and has so many similarities to a liberal arts college. Comparing it to UMD is like comparing apples to oranges.

10K is not SLAC size. Almost all SLACs are about 2-2.5K.

Bottom line, a kid thinking of UMD is not thinking of W&M or vice versa. My kid is looking at places like UMD, Ohio State, Penn State Michigan State, U Conn, Pitt, even VTech. W&M is not even in the conversation.

My kid chose UMD over WM, Lehigh, CWRU, BU, Minnesota, Ohio St. and Pitt. He was all over the place!

Good choice. Go Terps!

Approximately 300 out of about 2 million test takers get a 1600. Impressive connections.
