MoCo school board ordered to pay $518K to former B-CC High teacher accused of racism

But I still can't get my head around how we are not teaching children that this truth, thst we did look and dress similarly is hateful and racist. I just can't get my mind around this part.
Yes people of the race often share similar traits. So what?

My second thought is that no teacher in the 80s would have told us to return to our assigned seats---and then explained the reasoning for the command. That's the unspoken problem. Why were the kids out of their assigned seats and arguing with fhe teacher's rules for the classroom?? They should have been sent to the office for not complying with the teacher

You cannot send kids to the office anymore. That is not a thing. There are no consequences that can be imposed for kids not following directions

What part of the MCPS budget will pay for this lawsuit? Or do they just increase class sizes some more in a few schools?

It comes from their self-insurance fund. I can't remember if MCPS has its own or if it just draws from the county's self-insurance fund.

This report from 2023 said Montgomery County had $86 million of our tax dollars set aside for its self-insurance fund, which includes "Self Insured Workers' Compensation, General and Auto Liability, Auto Physical Damage, and Property matters."

https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/OMB/Resources/Files/omb/pdfs/FY23/psprec/30-Finance-FY2023-REC-Publication-Report.pdf

More description:

The Montgomery County Self-Insurance Program, established under County Code 20-37, provides comprehensive property and casualty insurance for the County and participating agencies. The program pays all claims for Self Insured Workers' Compensation, General and Auto Liability, Auto Physical Damage, and Property matters. The program is funded through contributions from the agencies, which are based upon an annual actuarial analysis of their exposures and outstanding and projected future claims. The program provides accurate and timely insurance and risk management advice to County Departments and participating agencies and reduces County and participating agency exposure to risk by: comparing the cost of commercially available coverage to evaluate the best method of funding exposure to loss; transferring contractual risk under indemnification/hold harmless agreements; and recommending and reviewing contractual insurance requirements for County agreements. The Program also purchases commercial insurance policies. The Program maintains a contract agreement with a Third Party Claims administrator to handle all claims submitted to the County and agencies - including Workers' Compensation, General Liability, Automobile Liability, Auto Physical Damage, and Property damage.

I think they don't care if parents do notice, because MCPS and the BOE ultimately are not scared of MoCo parents.

They're more scared of their peers in county and state government and believe themselves to be immune to pushes for accountability because public education is a monopoly and few people are lining up to replace them as board members.

^ so every parent, student and staff that gives a F should contact their ELECTED person in the county and state legislatures now. They work for you, the tax payer voters!!!

So Mooney keeps his BCC principal job even after saying he invented a quote?

Propose a name for new BCC principal then. Shortage of principals. Most will have to learn on the job. Start a petition if you want a leader change. Complain, you have a right to. Start a movement to if you feel strongly about it, get others onboard

What exactly does the MCPS central office earn its salaries for if not for working on staffing? There's plenty of principals of smaller schools who wouldn't mind an upgrade. There are plenty of APs who would love a promotion to Principal who haven't admitted to lying about a teacher. The question is whether MCPS considers gross mismanagement a firing offense (for Mooney), not whether the pool of replacements exists.

No one principal will please all parents. Some are more effective at handling families and pleasing that what-do-they-actually-do Central Office. Wasn't the last Principal of BCC sent to Central office for what...? - a mishandling of an incident involving drunk students and not allowing them to walk at their graduation? Under Mooney there have been multiple lockdowns and this. What is Central Office going to do now? Huh Taylor and company?

Right! This idea that it is the job of MCPS PARENTS to propose potential replacements for Mooney and not the Director, Associate Superintendent, Chief of Schools and the Superintendent himself is illogical, backwards and ridiculous.

It is the job of that entire chain of people to supervise, discipline and nurture the principal pipeline.

Something missing in all of these comments is that the jury found that Mooney was not responsible. We weren't party to all the information the jury heard so there possibly is more here than is being said in that article.

Parents have been complaining about him and trying to get rid of him for a very long time. But if MCPS keeps a principal who LIES then that's really, really bad IMO. Someone who lies should not be molding our future adult citizens.

The problem is all of the people above him lie too, so that won't be the reason they get rid of him unless someone outside of his chain of command makes them.

We need to continue to vote out the county council and BOE members till we get competent ones. This principal should be terminated.
