The Annual Waitlist / Waiting Pool Reality Check Thread

Gonzaga, one of the largest and least expensive schools, did not go to their waitlist for a single candidate. That evidence flies in the face of the theory that fewer accepted students will attend because of financial pressures or uncertainty.

I’ll modifying my statement.: I don’t know what the tuition is at Gonzaga but I seem to recall hearing it’s a lot less than the $50-$60,000 of so many other DMV schools. I’m also not saying that the waitlists are going to move dramatically. There are people who have all sorts of different circumstances and levels of confidence. You might also see families choose to abandon their contracts and down payments come June 1. But I think it’s misguided to assume that everything is hunky-dory here.

It’s not that it’s honky dory, just that there is enormous wealth in the area. The bulk of it is unaffected by the current mayhem. There may be a some action at the edges, but I don’t think it will impact much.

Those on the waitlist do have a chance, most schools take at least a couple kids and if someone gets in, it might as well be your child. So if you care, contact the school, reiterate the reasons why that school is your top choice, why it would be a great fit for your child (add in any new accomplishments since apps were due), suggest how your child/you would be involved there (sports, service, drama, newspaper, etc.) and flat out state your child will attend if given a spot. Good luck!

+2 My DC attends a private k-8. DC was rejected from Maret for 9th, despite the fact that “Maret waitlists everyone.” It was their first choice. They were very upset and I told them to just tell their friends they were waitlisted. No one has to know it was a rejection. WL at GDS and Field too.

WIS waitlist is real/ we were outright rejected

This idea that schools waitlist everyone instead of rejecting some of them is unsupported by any facts or knowledge.

Of course, putting an applicant in the wait pool doesn’t cost the school anything and it does give them a wider selection of applicants if they do need to go to the pool to fill shortfalls in enrollment.

But at the same time it is dishonest and and these schools are not staffed with cynical people without standards. They know a rejection stings but at the same time it frees the applicant up to pursue other options.

Love this.
Unless the school has outright stated “we waitlist everyone” and someone has screenshots of said statement to prove it.. I don’t believe it.
Waitlisting everyone sounds like a logistical nightmare for admissions offices who already appear unable to handle to volume of parents vying to get their kids in.

I'm hearing a lot of reports like this from our K-8 families. A lot of surprises.

Did anyone get in off of waitlists last week? Or will the schools on spring break last week go to the waitpool this week? I figured to the extent there was any chance, it would be after decisions were required. We are likely not interested in a space after June 1st and I would like to just expectation set (and shift my kid’s mindset) as soon as possible.

I suspect that there will be very little movement. Seems that the trend of schools getting more and more applications and more people moving to private held true and even increased this year. Gonzaga not going to waitlist was a total surprise but would guess they won’t be the only one, but might be the only one who actually says it

Are Big 3 WLs for 9th grade real? Maret? WIS?

Anyone on SJC waitlist hear a final decision?

I don't think you get a "final decision".

The Gonzaga email that announced they would not be going to the WL this year is the first time I ever heard of something like that.

It's possible that schools extend offers of admission to those on the WL as late as the start of school in August. This is because of special circumstances with admitted students that have made deposits (e.g. People moving because of job transfer).

If you haven’t heard anything by Sep 1, that’s your final decision.
