Is she saying that only 34% of their applicants go to a high school which releases ranking data? My kid's FCPS school didn't rank, but I'm pretty sure they provided GPA ranges and the percentile of the class in that range in the school profile they send to colleges. It's not hard to figure it out from there.

It's these sorts of answers that annoy me when it comes to Dean J. She knows they have more detailed information than specifically "class rank".

At my FCPS school college application information night last Fall, I directly asked if they provide gpa ranges or class gpa percentiles and they said no. So at least from our school DeanJ did not have any more detailed information.

Every time people don’t get the result they want, they assume UVA is lying or hiding something. They don’t need to. They evaluate thousands of applicants per year, they know NoVA and MD schools without any double top secret details about your kid.

This. When did everyone become so soft and entitled?

Yes, I'm sure you're a "tough guy".

No

Just look at 2023-2024 admissions cycles. Your kid is in the lower left "blob of green." He was not as good as other applicants from Chantilly HS. Sorry, but that's how it goes. Hopefully, something might change in the RD round.

Different NoVa HS here - There is no blob of green. It's all overlapping red, blue and green all the way out, except for maybe 3 or 4 outliers. It's not cut-and-dried.

Interesting... I'm very surprised to hear that your school has no general areas of mostly red and mostly green. What school is this? Is it a small private?

There is almost always a larger area of green checks in the upper right on Naviance scattergrams within the FCPS high schools. (Of course, there are red Xs within the green blob and green checks within the red blob and a very overlapped boundary area. But still -- it gives the general idea of "thresholds.")

It’s already been said..they didn’t have enough high rigor AP classes compared to their peers. For UVA it’s not GPA, it is the specific classes with As

Oh please! Your kid isn’t owed anything. My kid was rejected OOS with the same stats, but I wasn’t ballyhooing that it wasn’t a meritocracy. He’s at a higher ranked school, and looking on college confidential his stats weren’t as high as some who got rejected. Apply to lots of target schools, no need to denigrate Pitt, which is very fine school.

Easy to say when your kid got into a better school.

APS doesn't rank kids who have a weighted 4.0 or higher, which at W-L is over 200 kids. So rank doesn't really exist.

Do your essays, ECs, etc. show that you have grown personally? UVA has a page on their website that literally tells you what they want from a competitive applicant. I think if you go back and reread what you've submitted and there isn't a human feel to your application - just awards and stats than that might be where you fall short. I think your LOR should also be able to highlight that story as well. Just my opinion.

I agree with this.

Correct. Was AP foreign language taken? If not UVa is going to be unlikely.

Those stats are not special nor especially strong for UVA(or most any other t30-ish). In the wheelhouse, but certainly no expectation of auto-admit.
Anonymous
OP, they will probably get into VT with those stats.

But if you're an AO lining up 50 kids from W-L (or Yorktown, or Wakefield) who have applied you can see the range of GPAs. Yes - rank doesn't matter as far as what is on the bottom of the transcript, but it still exists.

Anonymous wrote:So glad my DC graduated from a high FARMS/URM fcps high school. They are living it up at UVA. 9 APs, 1440 SAT, varsity sports, work experience. Nothing amazing. No national awards, no research, no robotics. It was easy for them to stand out and be in the top 10%. Many strong classmates with similar stats and ECs were also admitted.

This. You also probably have an idea of the school’s range of GPAs and the distribution generally.

UVA doesn’t care about GPA so this seems like a stretch.

But that was his first choice until it wasn’t and I have another kid whose school isn’t in the T100…and in many ways it’s better.
