Shocker, MD Income taxes to increase

The state enormously raised the car registration fee last year and that alone offsets the piddly tax cuts people might get, which I gather is under $200 on average. Raising fees is a stealth tax.

Politically, I'm going to be watching what happens in 2026 with interest.

We need a functioning Republican Party that doesn't nominate Trump nuts.

There's a lot of troll fodder in this thread and I assume that most of the people replying on it will be barely affected by this budget no matter which way it eventually ends up, but speaking as a single parent in the middle of the mid of MD, any tax increase will adversely hinder my daily life.

I'll just leave these quotes and article links for you all to glaze over:

“Every Marylander will pay some sort of additional tax and fee under this budget – every Marylander,” said Ready.

“The biggest complaint we get is that it’s too expensive to live here,” Pippy said. “We’ve just got to be straight with Marylanders … We’re making Maryland more unaffordable.”

This one speaks to the core problem of MD politics:

But Buckel is also a realist: With Democratic super-majorities in the House and Senate, he knows there is only so much Republicans can do except try to get taxpayers motivated and argue their case to Democratic lawmakers.

And one for the road:

Property taxes disproportionately affect homeowners in areas with high property values, which often include historically marginalized communities. Maryland municipal property values are 13% higher than its unincorporated counterparts and it results in higher taxes, creating financial strain for individuals, particularly those on fixed incomes or in gentrifying neighborhoods. This dynamic can lead to displacement, rising inequality and community instability. It’s a formula no leaders want to contribute to.

Maryland’s Bureau of Revenue Estimates (BRE) has released its analysis of Governor Wes Moore’s income tax package and it demonstrates an unsurprising fact:

The governor has targeted Montgomery County with a grossly disproportionate share of his tax increase.

Because they have to once again, make up for the shortcomings of the outgoing GOP governor.

As much as I like Gov. Moore, this is on him, not Hogan.

Democrats always want to pay more taxes, don’t they? That’s why they hate Trump so much.

This year I pay more for my MD taxes than my Federal taxes. Uggh…

Better than Republicans who want to have their cake and eat it too, so they increase spending and lower taxes, leaving a mess for Democrats to clean up. A tale as old as time.

My Maryland tax rate is the same as it was last year.

Same here. The changes would apply to the current tax year and beyond. It’s a massive tax increase on the middle class to pay for what?

Montgomery County is the problem with Maryland. Its wealthy, ultra-left voters vote against their self interest to signal virtue, and maybe even for truly moral reasons. Because they won’t even consider republicans, again on a moral basis, the state is run by a uniparty that simply raises taxes and shrugs when it comes to accountability. This will only end with the continued economic and educational degradation of the state as a whole. It’s really sad and seems inevitable. Please fire away with MAGA ad hominems.

It’s fair to say that the major problem with the State’s economy is that MoCo stopped generating private sector jobs.

Governor’s budget proposal to include tax cuts and ‘growth agenda’ spending

Moore: 82% of people will see a cut or no change in taxes; corporate tax rate would also be cut

but yet my taxes will go up plus a surcharge on capital gains. They just love losing wealthy residents to VA. At some point, who will stay? There is zero incentive to stay in MD when VA is 5 min from my house.

The problem is too many former MD residents hop over to VA and continue to vote for Dem policies.

Inch by inch VA gets more and more like MD but because it's still better than MD they don't see a problem.
