Do you want people to have to buy something at libraries to use it?

Yeah, they should just freeze to death!

No they shouldn't but the library is not a homeless shelter.

We should convert libraries and post offices into homeless shelters.

B/c who needs a library or post office?? You people putting homeless before kids.

The homeless deserve to be there as much as your kids do. I know, I know. It's a hard pill to swallow, but just try.

they actually don’t have the same right to be there. The library is supposed to be a place for everyone to be safely and comfortably to access media - it’s not a homeless shelter. If a homeless person is there to read the newspaper, awesome - as long as they are safe and not disruptive (including smell). A library is not a homeless shelter. I repeat, a library is not a homeless shelter.

Of course they have the same exact rights to be there as you and your spawn do. You just think you are so very special because you can afford a shower. Get over yourself, princess. If you don't like them being there, feel free to petition your local government to open day centers where they can get shelter from the weather.

DC has plenty of day shelters : https://dhs.dc.gov/page/day-services-centers

A library is to access media. It’s not a homeless shelter. Attitudes like yours lead to the degredation of public spaces, which will lead to a lack of support for them. Right now, taxpayers would rally to keep libraries open. But if they continue as homeless shelters, the public will not support them.

And f off with your supercilious references to “spawn.” The people who have the most to lose are low income kids and adults who need the library to access books & computers they don’t have at home.

OH FFS you don't think homeless people have a need to access media. In fact, they should have priority since that is their only option to get on a computer, get newspapers or books. You have a home with internet. Stay there.

Low income people down look down on the homeless. I was very poor growing up and my mother and I shared our food with homeless people, and didn't tell them they don't belong in the library. It's privileged, rich jerks like you who think they are better because you have money that want them out of public spaces. You don't even want to be reminded they exist.

No … I want the library to be a place for everyone to be able to use for it’s primary purpose (media access). when it’s dominated by unstable street homeless people then nobody can use it (including low income people). There are day shelters for homeless people.

Princess, just because you don't want to see homeless people and share a space with them doesn't make the space unusable for everyone. Get over yourself. Perhaps DC has a few day shelters, but by and large communities don't have shelters where the homeless can go. I'll make sure to tell the next homeless person I see that they can get warm at the library :D

there will be no library in the future if stupid smug progressives like you have their way. They will lose public support because they are no longer an amenity for everyone to use. or they will transform into spaces where nobody is permitted to sit, just like some Starbucks have taken out tables.

As long as there are enough progressives like me, we will make sure to vote for public spaces where everyone is welcome. Maybe not you, but everyone else.

It’s 2025 not 2020. And pledging to destroy public spaces is not the cool virtue signaling you think it is.

About the only thing good about the Trump era Supreme Court is that it is likely to roll back the legal precedents that stopped cities from ensuring public safety and protecting public space for public enjoyment. Of course Starbucks is private, but I do think its recent policy change shows a sea shift in beliefs about what is appropriate.

It all makes sense now. OF COURSE YOU'RE MAGA. Do you also think you're a saved follower of Jesus?

Omg stop.

It does society no good to let every public space sink to the lowest common denominator of behavior. We went through this with the sidewalk homeless encampments during covid.

Are you ok with increasing taxes then to crate safe spaces for the homeless population to exist where you don't have to interact with them? What is your solution?

Libraries are some of the last indoor public spaces where they are allowed. That's all. It's not an urban progressive mindset. It's that there is no legal reason to discriminate against members of the public who are non-disruptive. My library has problems with the building exterior but not interior.

I think it’s entirely reasonable for a library to preserve what it actually is - a place to access media - and not turn into a homeless shelter.

A homeless person sitting there reading is no different than you sitting there reading. They have every right to be there.

No they don’t. use your head.

I stopped taking my then young DC to our local Fairfax County library branch because it became an ersatz homeless shelter.

I haven’t visited a county library in a decade.

Who cares??? You have everything you need without having to go there. I live in DC and go to the library all the time. Including the one downtown near Metro Center. Love seeing everyone there.

I haven’t been to the MLK library recently so I hope you are right that “everyone” is still there, including non-homeless people. Prior to the renovation it was in very bad shape - I was very creeped out going there and there was plenty of crime and drug dealing happening in spots with poor visibility. The renovations seem to have taken away the hidden spots which is good. I was not impressed to see homeless people still sleeping/pissing at the front entrance on a Sunday afternoon recently though.

I love how you're trying to twist my words and shape it into something I'm not saying. If a homeless person is dealing drugs in the library, they need to be arrested and removed just like everyone else. If they are breaking the rules, they need to be removed. Simply existing in the same space as the rest of the population does not break the rules, however.

sure it breaks the rules if the rules are what they should be: the library is a place to use media, not to sit all day as a homeless shelter alternative.

If they are using the media all they, they aren't breaking the rules.

Fun fact: most homeless shelters require their occupants to leave during the day (I heard this had something to do with residency laws but DK if this is true). Homeless individuals need somewhere to go when it is cold or hot out, and often communities specifically designate libraries. If you don't like it, work to find/fund another solution.

EXACTLY! I have no problem with a homeless person sitting in a library during the day.

I used to work from the library, but you cannot leave anything alone to even use the bathroom, there are guys walking about very suspiciously. Security does keep an eye on them a bit, but it does not make me feel comfortable.

I would never dream of leaving my stuff unattended even if I saw no homeless person around.

I see no evidence that there are not enough “safe spaces” already in DC but if not, sure, raise some taxes or have Ted Leonesis pay for it. My solution is that we simply have to mantain rules of decorum and safety so public spaces can be used for their intended purposes. Frankly I don’t care about homeless encampments in the woods or by freeways, but they cannot be in parks or sidewalks. I don’t care if a non-smelly, sober, homeless person who is not actively delusional wants to sit in the library and read or use the computer.

You are why Trump won, and the Democrats will be wandering in the electoral desert for a long time.

There are safe spaces already. Destroying libraries is entitlement, nothing more.

Anyone who voted for Trump clearly doesn't read so I don't believe you ever stepped foot in the library.
