They're trying to explain the problem with school vouchers to Republicans. It's not going well. |
We should, yes. It, too, is a giveaway to the real estate industry, with no real policy justification. Also, we can't afford it. |
I got my first house through a government program. So happy it was there for me. It gave me the boost that I needed. I think it's great. |
+100 This is basic logic. I think people truly do not comprehend this very basic point. |
We need more homeowners in the younger generation. We need people rooted and invested in their neighborhoods and communities. If you can afford $2000 for rent you can afford $2000 for a mortgage. Hopefully this would lower the bar for people to get into their own homes. |
The volumes of money that Republicans have thrown at banking bailouts, corporate bailouts, tax cuts for billionaires that they don't need, tax cuts for megacorporations that companies don't need, allowing offshore tax dodges and, along with lying so that we could go to war in Iraq and so on is in the DOUBLE-DIGIT-TRILLIONS. It by far dwarfs whatever your 1,454 things (and most of that number is just hyperbole that you made up) that you think Dems have thrown money at. |
People continually underestimate the number of stupid people. A Cal Berkeley professor studied it, here is a brief overview of his findings. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TGr8bMTSD4s |
It isn’t that simple. $25k down payment assistance for a subset of moderate income homebuyers who would still have to qualify for a mortgage would not add $25k to the cost of homes. It would have less effect on housing prices than a Fed cut in interest rates would. |
Except it's not only about lack of affordability. The younger generations are not quick to settle down in one place and have the responsibility and headaches that come with home ownership. Heck just look at the workplace? How many Gen Zs stick it out more than 10-20 yrs at the same company? |
No one stays at the same company anymore, but people stay in the same town/city. |
How many companies are offering longterm employment with the benefits that Boomers took for granted? I don't know why you're blaming Gen Z for the policies of corporations run by Boomers and Gen X (I'm a just-barely Boom, fwiw) |
Why the focus on single moms? Let’s give all of this to everyone!!! So much joy we would all have. So much unburdening. |
Excellent. Encourage politicians to make it happen. |
What the heck does that mean? If you can’t afford it, you can’t afford it. Life’s not fair. What do they define as “moderate income homebuyers”? |
DP. Are you stupid? Sellers won’t ACTUALLY have to raise their price by 25k because the offers will already be coming in padded with that 25k. But the home price will go up by 25k regardless. In the DMV that won’t matter much. But in places like Detroit, it would. 100k house becomes 125k house and so on and so forth. How is that helping affordability overall? The next group of buyers is going to need 30k. Are we just going to keep throwing money at it forever? It is literally just like higher ed. The more money thrown at it, the more expensive and unaffordable it becomes, so then you throw more money at it. An endless cycle. As things get more expensive, what does this actually do for affordability in the long run? Or for SUPPLY? None of these problems will be solved unless supply is addressed. And that is difficult to address at a federal level. As much as I hate Trump, Harris’s economic policies are absolute trash and going to do nothing but lead to more inflation and less affordability because it moves the goalposts further and further out. Our 2 choices are very grim. But now I’m sort of hoping Trump gets elected and just doesn’t accomplish much. Because honestly sometimes the best thing for government to do is just to do nothing. |
