As an Ivy reject at a WASP, you're not wrong, but I'll be working a job most Ivy League students only dream of after I graduate, with coworkers mostly from Ivies + WASP + etc. I don't think I missed out on much.

Let’s just say that Ivy admits who chose WASP (and there are many) don’t have the same chip on their shoulder.

haha this exactly! but the population of ivy admits who choose WASP is very very small (cue the DCUM person who chose Williams over Yale in 1983!)

WASP are much smaller with a fraction of applicants so this makes sense.

Plus, 1/4 of Harvard and Williams admits chose Williams
Only 1/10 of Harvard and Brown admits chose Brown….

WASP = lower Ivies, for the uninitiated.

I have a kid at WASP and a kid at HYP. There's no doubt that from bragging to friends, HYP is the mic drop. And my kid LOVES it. But he's also a very outgoing person who makes things happen. Will apply to 20 internships, will jump up to make a speech, will cold call professors he doesnt have a class with etc. He does just fine in a school that requires a bit of aggression.

My kid at WASP has a lot more than comes to him. Professors who will contact him and say, why not apply to xyz .. I can make an introduction. He's taken music lessons in his free time (offered for free). He has more time in some ways and also freer in his choices to try the newspaper or do stand up. You dont have to be good at this one thing to try it there, you can try things for the first time.

IOW, I have two kids who found their fit. They offer different things. Outcomes will be what you make of your time

it's for excellent sheep who want the prestige of a "name brand" but also are very sensitive and need to be coddled by small class sizes, outside of large cities, and don't want to be intimidated by urban enviros, or large class sizes. they need protection and affirmation but despite having progressive identities tend to progress into largely boring, conservative career paths.

I didn’t go to Williams, but am quite familiar with it. It seems to groom people for success in ways that very few other colleges do. People seem to graduate from there all polished & ready for prime time.

Colleges don’t groom anything. They take already successful people and give them resources to sustain their success.

we live in NYC and these schools are very in demand. and these are kids who have been taking the subway to school since 6th grad so I doubt their intimidated by the mean streets of Cambridge or Palo Alto.

This is a lot of judgement for a relatively mundane act- choosing a college.

These are just two kids with different personalities. Premeds, pre law, math/cs students at LACs are no less aggressive

Oh my goodness, bless your dark and ugly heart! Please seek some therapy, or at minimum, choose to curb your toxicity.

Pre-law kids are known to be competitive at Williams, particularly those in the Williams law society. If you think the type of individual who has a 4.0 from a top liberal arts college with tutorials and seminar, has a high LSAT score, and a desire to go to Harvard or Yale law isn't competitive, you're kidding yourself. Sure, some kids are shy or struggle to take advantage, but they will ultimately do worse than the more "aggressive" students, LAC or university.

I really dislike the "coddle" narrative by the parents here. It's simply a difference in how the institution is run and exercises a liberal arts curriculum.
