Video Ads

Occasionally I'll click on a link that takes me to the new format and that's when big videos wishing Keanu a Happy Birthday! appears and then as I scroll it jumps down to the corner, all of which is annoying.

So, to avoid this, just use the Original Site, the link is at the bottom of the page.

I just followed your advice and it was such a relief to be free of the jumping ads. It will probably only be temporary relief, but, wow, so much more pleasant.

Now, in the interest of disclosure, I am not donating; however, I think you have a good chance of collecting what you need to remove the ads.

I think the pop-up ad is really the biggest problem for users.

Lol

I’m just being honest here.

Why do you think Jeff has a good chance of collecting what he needs when you yourself won't donate? This is an anonymous forum.

OMG. I didn’t know the original site link was there. THANK YOU!!!

Because I think there are more committed posters than me….and even more with more disposable income.

I’m just speculating, so I could be wrong.

Either way, I am not donating. 🤷🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

What if it is only video-ad free but the display ads remain?

I’d totally be fine with that

Agree

Same. Maybe if the regulars start clicking on ads more frequently it will generate more income for Jeff and he won't need as many ads.

What do you all mean by the original site link?
KeanuReeves is driving me bonkers.

Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and you will see a link that says Go To Original Site

I also suggest that if you bookmark the DCUM page as I do (I bookmark Recent Topics) then bookmark the Original Site version, not the new version.

And, as I noted on another thread, his birthday was actually yesterday! Haha

It doesn’t last, tho…..I’d have to keep clicking it. Annoying.

Jeff, do you have any idea what kind of subscription model would be sustainable?

In a post above I discussed the infrastructure challenges. Quite a bit of development and administrative overhead would be required.

About the only workable idea I have now is to create a Patreon account and ask for donations in return for stopping the video ads. It wouldn't really be a fair system because I can't offer anything beyond stopping the video ads in return for donations. Also, those who pay would be footing the bill for those who don't. But this wouldn't requite any development.

You have a lot of well off folks addicted to this site. Set a target to raise to get rid of the ads and put it out there. You’ll raise that money in no time. Seriously.

I’m the PP who said he should go the Patreon route. I have no idea how any of this works. How often would Jeff need to solicit donations? Monthly? Annually? Only once?

Wikipedia does annual drives. I’d be fine with that

You are being so disrespectful, instead of Jeff generating income, you want him to have to continually beg for money?

Don't like it at all. I guess just ignore and close them. These ads can also backfire on the advertisers/sponsors.

Sensory overload makes it hard to look at them and find out what they’re about, just that they are aversive and I don’t want to see them. I do avoid cabs, gas stations, and websites where unwanted video exposure is a part of the experience.

I find them to be really disturbing.

+1 just realized I’ve been off dcum most of the day and that’s why
