I had a buddy just have his kid try out for Capital City Thunder 16u.

He saw they are looking for a few more kids to round out the team. His kid went to the workout and coach was awesome. Head coach of Falls Church. They may still be looking for a kid or two. Most tournaments local, but a few out of town HoopGroup and Made tourney.

coachdarrian@capitalcitythunder.com

Thants the email. Hope it helps if to have a kid looking for a team.

I think you need to drop the 3 dots in that email

Looking for current information on Girls rising 5th Grade AAU teams in the general areas of Bethesda, McLean, NW DC. My DD currently plays and we’ve seen the following teams: Classics, Darnstown, PPA, PVT, and T2F. Are there any others out there? Can’t say I’ve been particularly impressed (just watching from the sidelines) with what I have seen. We are new to AAU Basketball and it all seems to disorganized and fragmented. Can’t make heads or tails of what’s the better league, which has the best coaching, etc. If my kid didn’t love to play as much as she does, I would throw the towel in because trying to figure it all out is one big headache. Any guidance would be most appreciated.

You're missing Elevate Elite, D1SA, GTS, Hurricanes.

Thanks. I looked on GTS website but only saw something for 7th and 8th grade. I will email and ask about 5th. I’ll research the others as well.

For girls - Fairfax Stars, Nova94.

From what I have seen, the 8-12Us are coached by parents with very few that have "real" coaches. So hang in there - your experience will get better as your daughter gets older.

Current HS player and none are that great. And we have been a part of 2 teams often mentioned on here as good/great programs.

Most tryouts are done already and teams are set so u can just email the coach and have your dd attend the tryout and see how the team is.

You can include the Fairfax Stars, but they are a top team and unless your daughter is amazing, she won’t have much of a shot. Same for Team Takeover, Team Durant, Boo Williams. The EYBL teams are on a different level. All players are usually D1 prospects, even coming off the bench.

PVT and Elevate Elite are decent mid tier teams, although Elevate is out in Reston/Herndon. PVT is usually decent for the area you are looking. They practice mostly in Bethesda these days even though they were purchased by the St James.

Hurricanes are in Arlington, so they may not work.

PVT should be fine for most families in your part of the DMV. I would travel to a more competitive team if your daughter is a prospect (Nike or adidas team, maybe UA team), but otherwise, PVT should be sufficient.

Can someone suggest the best way to get started. Have a current 5th grader who played for school team this year after not playing ever before. Averaged 6-8 point per game (overall game scores were in the 20s or 30s) with no prior coaching or experience. He wants to continue and to improve. Should we start with a coach? He wants to do travel basketball. We are in DC. What would the next logical steps be? Basketball camps? Coaching?

Recommend training programs and to attend as many tryouts as possible in the next cycle. Look into PPA as they have multiple levels and go from there. AAU basketball is very much word of mouth.
