DS nearly failed his AP Calc BC class in 12th grade. He's a humanities major (international affairs), and instead of worrying all year over so much math he couldn't handle, he should have taken AP Stats instead, which would probably have come in more useful for his line of study. Alas, we did not advise him correctly (he had successfully taken AP Calc AB the year before, but in hindsight, it was virtual during the pandemic, and it wasn't at the right level).

So unless your child is a strong math student, maybe take AP Stats instead. Depending on what he wants to do, he can add data science to his major and AP Stats will give him an introduction to that.

If a student wants to minor in data science in college, they will likely need to take calculus. Stanford's data science minor requires either multi-variable calculus and linear algebra or vector calculus.

DC took AP Stats and Stats Seminar - no Calc. Direct admit to Data Science in College of Engineering at large state school - honors program - will obvs be required to take several Calc classes for major.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. What I meant to say was that, if a student wants to minor in data science in college, they will likely need to take calculus in college. At the high school level, data science is sometimes presented as a way around calculus so my only point was that calculus may ultimately still be needed for a minor (or major) in data science. Students can certainly be admitted to a college data science program without high school calculus, as your DC shows.

Kid #1 took AB Calc as a junior and BC Calc as a senior. Went to William and Mary and is double majoring in Math and Computer Science.

Kid # 2 took AB Calc as a junior and a one year IB math class as senior. Is at Northeastern majoring in business with a minor in Data Science.

Looks like BC kids getting in higher ranked schools?

Most highly ranked universities state quite clearly that academic rigor is the first thing they look at. So for kids that don't have a significant hook, doing well in the most challenging classes is pretty much the only way their application even gets looked at.

University of Rochester.

She took AP stats and pre-calc as a senior.

I'm seeing post-BC kids not in top schools. Like mine. Very happy and surrounded by similarly bright kids.
