So we have been going back and forth in our house on which math track to take. DC wants to accelerate to take AP Calc AB junior year and AP Calc BC or AP Stats senior year. I know this is not super accelerated and I'm not looking to start a discussion on hard math classes. I think he should stay on his current track and take AP Calc AB senior year. Looking at his projected courses his junior year along with his significant outside commitments/leadership and SAT prep, I think he should leave AP Calc AB to senior year. DC will mostly certainly be a humanities major.
It seems like everyone headed to the top schools are finishing with BC or multivariable calc or whatever high math. Could you post where you child is headed and the highest math course taken in HS? Please also post their projected/possible major. |
AP Calc AB as a Junior, AP Stat as a Senior headed to W&M, Econ or Business |
Linear algebra. Pitt for Biology. |
AP Precalc is new for 2023-24. That means that your kid will be able to take precalc as a junior and have a math AP score for college apps. Kids applying this year didn’t have that option. |
junior - calc bc
senior - stats and linear algebra/discrete math business/georgetown |
This is bizarre. Lots of colleges consider precalc remedial, so they don’t offer it for credit. |
AP Calc AB as junior
AP Calc BC as senior Princeton as CS major |
just college board looking for more revenue |
It’s not for credit, it’s for the score. Taking AP Precalc junior year gives you a math score to put on your application even if you don’t or can’t submit your SAT. |
linear algebra + stats AP
columbia for poli sci |
Our kid debated between Calc AB and Calc BC as a senior. Kid was stronger in humanities, but chose BC based on guidance from school and specifically for college app purposes. I do not think it had any bearing at all on college admissions, as our kid's friends who chose to take Calc AB instead did very well with college admissions. If we had it to do over, I would strongly encourage my kid to take Calc AB instead. |
Linear Alg + AP Stats Senior year…. UVA Engineering |
FCPS
11th Calc BC 12th Calc 3/Linear Algebra, AP Stats UMD CS (direct admit) |
Take a look at AP Stat, it’s fine for a HS class, but remedial for college. Most schools give elective credit, if anything. |
I see a lot of linear algebra. Where does multivariable calculus place in the sequencing? Is it after AB/BC calculus? Or after Linear algebra? Are they both year long courses? |
