Barry was the GOAT Mayor! Okay, maybe not but I seem to be able to laugh about it now. |
My favorite part was when reporters started asking him why he was in San Diego and not helping with the response back in DC, he checked himself into the hospital complaining of chest pains. I remember watching the news and a family member spoke for everyone: "How convenient!" |
Are you kidding? In the 80's and 90's there was no part of DC that wasn't blighted. Even along K Street the public spaces were taken over by the homeless, there was a tent city on PA Ave. |
| I was here back then, and I thought DC was kind of boring. Restaurants (of which there were far fewer than there are now) were all super formal and a snooze..think lots of meat and potatoes. When Zaytinya opened, it was a HUGE deal. |
I can't laugh about it because people no longer agree that he was terrible. Doomed to repeat! |
Thank you for the history. Those regional stores were a part of the character of the community. |
That’s crazy |
I remember the storm but hadn't heard about Barry selling plows. It was true, though, that suburban contractors refused to plow in DC. I'm not sure if they were accused of racism, but the real reason was because DC wasn't paying its bills and they weren't going to plow for nothing. |
Let’s be real, until about 10-15 years ago the restaurant scene in DC has been god awful. Bar and grill everything. The Palm and Nora were fine dining. It was all midwestern tastes at corporate expense account prices. |
| I can’t believe nobody’s mentioned the shows at Fort Reno! The center of my high school social life during the Summer in the late 80s/early 90s! |
|
Then: the Bullets sucked
Now: the Wizards suck But at least you can take Metro to go see them. Also, more bars had more live music and more often |
Those still go on, actually! |
Not really throughout the 90’s. My office moved to Columbia Square when it was new in the late 80’s because the developer was a client and we were surrounded by crime and blight. But the area improved quickly and was fine by the mid-90’s. Same with Capitol Hill. It was dangerous in the 80’s, but improved dramatically throughout the 90’s. The Union Station remodel was done in 1988, and it really was the stimulus for change. It’s so sad to see it return to the state it is in now. The difference now is that there are more affluent people living and working in the high crime areas. |
Not that familiar with Hartford, are you? DC is quite a bit nicer. |
And what's with the women wearing short skirts and tight leggings? Are they trying to get raped? |
