| Americans, even toddlers, these days are overweight. I think it has to do primarily with the following: toxic food supply, overly large portion sizes with everything, overeating in general, especially for kids - snack culture. We ate 3 meals, no seconds unless a growing teen playing sports, and perhaps a small healthy snack. We didn't take food to high school sporting events, just starved. No team stops at restaurants. Also nothing like toddler play group snacks/sports team snacks. |
| It's not the snacking culture per se. It's the kind of snacks people here consume. Think chips, Goldfish crackers, candy, doughnuts...just not mindful eating in general. How many people do you know will reach out for an apple instead of a cookie? |
| It’s overeating for the vast majority or eating garbage or overeating garbage. We had lunch again today in my office. I ate my own food. I also drank straight water, but socialized anyhow. People always look at me crazy. Not interested in Pizza Hut pizza if I’m going to intentionally run outside in 90+ degree heat for acclimation training. |
| I've lived overseas quite a lot. I think what happens in some of these countries, I am thinking Eastern Europe/post Soviet space, is that women really do starve themselves (coffee and a piece of fruit for lunch/coffee and cigarettes to tide over, drinking/smoking vs. eating)and then boom, they hit 40 and it's like a switch goes off and all the damage they've done to their bodies means they rapidly gain weight. That's not everyone, of course, but very very many women. |
| These discussions always make me chuckle. The many scientists who study this for a living can’t figure out why we’ve become so fat, but every skinny broad on DCUM thinks they have the answer. |
Scientists know. We know. We eat too much and we eat too much junk and we sit in a car instead of walking or biking and we sit behind a desk all day. The worst is that people let their kids get fat and it changes their physiology so that it's nearly impossible for those kids to become normal weight adults. |
Well. I was pregnant. This is why I’m overweight. I’m generally a “normal” weight. I still stand by my statement. I really do think the food in the US is to blame. Obviously this is just anecdata but I’ve heard many similar accounts. |
Didn’t you just live through covid? Clearly scientists don’t know all that much. |
And an appreciable number of them are in the exact same group that refuse to except the physics of all this. |
No…we all know why so many people are fat. Go to any restaurant and observe the portions consumed, look at what’s in the grocery cart of people shopping, look at the massive ice cream cones people consume as a “treat” except they have them on the regular, look at what most people are ordering in Starbucks (hint, not coffee). It is very obvious what is going on. But go ahead, play clueless |
Wait so is it eating junk and sitting in the car, or physiology? |
That doesn’t explain why there are people who eat this way and never get fat, or people who never eat this way and still get and stay fat. |
Ditto. Even many UMC Americans don't have a discerning palate so it's not unusual to see them consume gas station soda or Pizza Hut. |
You have got to be kidding me. How many people who got fat got that way without overeating? |
Bit we do. We're skinny. I'm 46 years old and the heaviest I've been was 154 lbs before delivering my 9 lbs baby and I'm 5'7. You should listen to me. |
